Batman Cape Collar?

I got the bulk of the sewing done on my cape, but want to add a collar. Should I stick with pleather, or would fabric be a stronger choice? I'm going to use a hook and eye fastener so want to make sure the collar can support the weight of the cape. I still have to add dowel rods and cut scallops but the tricky part is over... I think.
