Batman Arkham Asylum Armor Update 4/5/12 Convention Pics Added

Re: Batman Arkham Asylum Armor Progress Update 3/4/11 Neck Piece Ready for Molding

what did you make your final gaunlets out of & what kind of mold technique did you use?

The gauntlets were made using Smooth-On Brand Smooth Cast 300 by slush casting. The mold is a silicone mold using rebound 25 and a support shell made of plasti-paste. Both smooth-on products.

It's coming along really well. Is the neck going to but up against the cowl or slightly overlap the cowl or vice versa?

It's intended to have a bit of a gap between them so I can move my head freely without the cowl catching on the neck piece. But we'll see what happens once I have it all pulled from the mold.

Wow! Thanks for the kind words. Just when I start to second guess my work, I see this. It does mean a lot to me.

Update time!

Pulled my first neck piece from the mold and did a test fit...

Turned out great! It fits really well and stays in place pretty well too with no clip or fastener to the under suit. But, I do intend to figure out some way to secure it to the chest piece so it will stay in place without a doubt.

It is a little smaller than what I intended. But I think it looks fine. And oh my god this design is so much more comfortable than my other cowl. Not that I'm knocking my old one. It's great too but breaking this up into two pieces is so much more practical.

Now I've got a couple new challenges. One, since I used a urethane plastic, it does not stretch, so I had to cut the pieces to get them on.

I was going to try and epoxy some elastic on the inside to help tighten the seams up but the two epoxies I tested don't work for squat. One was a 5 minute epoxy that I got at the hobby shop. It's worked great for making my sculpting tools but not this. The other was a multi-purpose flexible epoxy (when cured) that is supposed to work well with plastics. Well, of course it doesn't work well with task 13.

I do intend to make cowl and neck pieces out of urethane rubber but I really don't have the time to run tests right now. I need this stuff ready for a con at the end of the month and have other things I need to ready.

Any recommendations for glues or what not that would adhere to this stuff so I can put snaps or elastic in these guys?

And here's another challenge I have. The under piece I have that helps hide the gaps is a balaclava but there is too much fabric in the neck and it likes to protrude past the cheek area of the cowl. You can see it doing so in the pic below.

I've never done any sewing but am willing to give a shot at modifying this thing or making one from scratch if someone can recommend a pattern and fabric. Here's a pic of it without the cowl or neck piece.

Any thoughts on a glue and balaclava remedy? Thanks for looking!

That neck and cowl look really good, I hope you can get all the bugs worked out. Best of luck..

Other than a couple minor mods, it is completed! I'll have more/better pics after this weekend and I'll put up the work I did on the leg pieces next week. I just thought I'd share this with you guys for now.

Yeah, sorry for the grainy, low res. I'm going to the local con this weekend so there will be more than enough pics to share then.

Thanks for looking!
