Question Banned: A potentially silly question

I have a question...

Mods just banned Death Grin yesterday for being a sock puppet account of a banned member.

Now this member originally asked for mods to ban him... But then he turns around and comes back and signs up again??? If he didn't want out, then why request to be banned?
It just makes no sense.

He made a snap, on-the-spot decision that he deeply regretted.

There was a whole big issue at the time. IIRC he was probably facing a banning anyway so pulled his own trigger. A true shame, the whole mess was.

Hmmmm.... I missed the story of what happened. I only knew of him in a positive light, then I heard he asked to be banned.
Is there a link to any threads that might shed the story, or have they all been cleaned up?

Members often ask to be banned in a moment of high emotion, often when they feel they are not being treated fairly. In almost every instance we practically BEG them to reconsider and not make a rash decision. Some do, some don't. Ultimately, if they decide they no longer want to have a membership here we acquiesce to their request.

Many, but not all come to regret the decision because they underestimated the importance of the community and their place in it. Unfortunately for them, we have a "once banned, always banned" policy and there is no coming back once you have been banned, regardless of the reason. For those that do realize they made a mistake, the only way to return is to create a sockpuppet and hope we don't catch them, but we often do, especially if they participate much.

Thanks Art!!
Is there a program that could catch accounts from the same IP faster? Maybe as soon as the account is activated? That would make it easier on you :lol

I can attest to the fact that banning is the last resort and usually comes long after it should... Meaning: the staff has ALWAYS played crysis negotiator... begging for people not to jump, all while being ridiculed for not doing this or that, while being bashed etc. WAAAH WAAAAH WAAAAH!!!

LOL!

We have lost some good ones since I first joined. The last one I borderline argued with Art about... but of course being on this side of the fence now, I didn't see all the facts and Art was 110% in the right. It still made me sad, but it had to be done.

As always my hats off to the current staff here! A LOT of hard work is put in that no one will ever see. In EVERY facet of the site, not just dealing with Bad members!

Back when Jay, Surfer, Walt, and I were on staff it was like the wild west.... (JediRick was like Matt Dillon, I guess I was more Festus? LOL!!!)

Art and crew are dealing with Robocop era Detroit up in here!!! :lol

I've always wondered about that. It seems like most of those members just get fed up when really what they want is a clean slate.

Makes me wish there was some way to cool them down. Decisions made in the heat of the moment are rarely well-made ones.

How about this, the next time someone insists on being banned, tell them that they will have a fate worse than banning: they will have to be a newbie again. Their current account will be closed and they will be made to make a new account and adhere to all the newbie rules. :lol

...If there was ever an election for evil genius, I'd run!

Your ideas are intriguing to me and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter.

I am disinclined to watch POTC. :p

Was he really that far in the sin bin? What I got out of it was that Oneye may have gone too far, but that Steve possibly did have a case to answer. Or maybe he did and I missed that part, I dunno/can't recall. It really was a sad one on all fronts though; I'm certain Oneye was doing right as he saw it whether misguided or not...AND we lost Steve into the bargain.

Well, certain may be too strong a word, but that's how it looked to me. Sad to know he's socking, it suggests he didn't think that through - everyone should know by now that the policy on self-requested bans is as firm as it is on regular ones. Ah damn, what a mess.
