I know this is wood but it's breakaway balsa wood so I wonder would it be con safe?

The answer to your question is: it depends. It depends entirely on the con and who runs it and what their policies regarding "weapons" are. Some, like ComicCon are pretty lenient while I've known someone that was hassled over having a Stargate zat, something that doesn't even look like a weapon of any sort and was made from solid resin.

Your best bet would be to contact the con itself and ask them if a balsa wood bat would be ok. Even then, be prepared to have security tell you no at the door or get grief once in the con itself. Granted that you're more likely to be hassled over something gun looking but sometimes security can be full of themselves and hassle people over anything they consider a weapon., like my zat example.
