Seriously everyone. Does anyone actually believe there is common sense in Hollywood when it comes to quality filmmaking? We wouldn't see 90% of the movies we do if studio execs actually took the time to think a movie through. All of us know what works and what doesn't. Opinions might change from person to person, but across the board, most of us like the direction the original Predator films went and at least the first 2 Alien films.
AVP was ONLY made to cash in on an exisiting franchise. No studio could care less what fans actually think beyond getting money from them. That's just the way it is. They throw something together to make money. PERIOD! Obviously it needs to be "good enough" to sell the tickets, but the true fans only make up a small fraction of a single % of those tickets. They're aren't 2 million members on this board after all.
Occasionally, an exec somewhere might have a brain fart and realize that a script is actually good. But how often does that happen? I can count on one hand the number of films I'm proud to say I've worked on which is pretty bad considering I have over 200 mainstream film and tv credits on my resume. That's Hollywood for you. All of us in the industry (not just FX, but film in general) want to change it, but unfortunately, our opinions aren't any more respected than anbody elses. You get to a point where you can only do the best work possible within the restraints that are put on you.
On that note, can you blame them even, the studios that is? Everyone has opinions about how lousy these films have gotten, yet we all keep seeing them, and we all keep buying the DVDs. From a business standpoint, the studio machine isn't broken. It's already been said in this thread. AVP made more money than any other film in the franchises.
In the end, we should all look to these movies for what they are and the inspiration they bring us, not to point fingers and lay blame for why they aren't better. We need to stop worrying about the could haves and should haves and accept the reality that most movies will suck on some level and not everyone is gonna be happy no matter what. Wouldn't most of you rather see an average AVP than no AVP? I cetainly would.
There is obviously plenty of creativity here. Why dwell on the lack of creativity of a few other people who aren't really trying to be creative in the first place. They aren't about the characters we all love. They're about the $ they can get from us.
Hopefully one day, one of us will win the lottery and do one of these films right, without studio intereference and politics. In the mean time don't turn our passion into something negative to complain about. Think positive, be creative, and better yourselves rather than follow their example.

This thread has gotten seriously off topic. I'm guilty of that as well. Larry only wanted to let everyone know that AVP2 has started and IS happening as we speak and that when the appropriate time comes, you'll possibly have some first hand details about it.
