AVATAR 2: THE WAY OF WATER (2022)

Apparently, Cameron has let it slip it may be possible for a Terminator reboot to come to be (and has admitted to being in talks about doing one).
There really is no need to reboot Terminator. All that has ever made sense to do after T1 was an R-rated horror/thriller Future War movie based on what Reese recounted in T1.

Though T2 is an amazing movie, it's basically just T1 all over again with a bigger budget, though more an action movie than a thriller and at the same time craps on what is established in T1.

Rebooting it completely is a waste of time. The setting won't work in mordern times. It works in the eighties.

After two weeks it's nearing the one billion dollar mark worldwide.
It's got to be benefitting quite a lot from the weak competition this holiday season.

Not that it wouldn't have done well regardless, but normally December is an absolute glut of alluring choices. Currently among the films playing near me, Way of Water is an easy #2 on my list... basically by default (and that's only because I haven't made it to The Fabelmans yet). Even looking at early Oscar buzz, it seems like an oddly high proportion of predicted contenders came out many months ago.

It's official, passed the one billion mark worldwide in two weeks and now number 2 of 2022 behind Top Gun 2. Domestic numbers are usually half of worldwide yet Top Gun 2 is the exception to the rule brining in 700+ million both domestic and worldwide. At the moment avatar 2 is following that half formula with 300+ domestic and 700+ worldwide, in two weeks where top gun 2 is seven months and counting.
What are the odds that laughable 2 billion dollar mark will happen? If not in the first run release then the re-release when future sequels release. I mean, there is a minions movie in the top five of 2022 and that jurassic park movie pulled a billion. The typical theater patrons are idiocracy at its finest.

I'm waiting for the wokest Terminator ever. This is their chance...:ninja:

Top Gun: Maverick was never released in China, so didn't have the benefit of Chinese box office. Avatar 2 was released in China but I don't think it's done that well there. Curious to see how much of a difference that will end up making.

I have never before seen A V A T A R cosplay, until this morning….

Holy Hilarity.

You’ve never gone to MegaCon have you? Every time I’ve gone, I’ve seen at least three at most five people cosplaying the aliens from the film every time I’ve gone (and no, not the same three to five people). I’ve seen pictures from other conventions that have shown people cosplaying the aliens.

It seems fashionable here to dump on this franchise.
People scream, shout, and stamp their feet every time these movies get brought up, yet it's the second highest grossing movie of the year, which is not bad for a 3hr sequel to a movie that came out 13 years ago. They were ready to hate it before they even saw the first trailer, and now they can't fathom that it's been a success. Every time I try to schedule a showing, the theater seating is packed! Which means the cash is still pouring in! That doesn't happen for movies with bad word of mouth. People are seeing this movie, and they are liking it and telling their friends to see it.

All I know is that I saw the movie last weekend and loved it. It's not 3 hours of straight action like a Transformer movie is, but it's far from boring. The movie is pure visual gold, and much more character driven than the first. In the first Avatar, Cameron made you fall in love with Pandora. In this one, you fall in love with its people. I'm going to see it again this weekend to see what I missed when I got up to pee. Also, I heard there was an after-credits scene I missed.

I don't think Cameron is bad, I just don't think he has any originality in him anymore. His old stuff wasn't just eye-candy, it was groundbreaking storytelling and directing. Now, it's just... blah. It's made for people who want to turn off their brains for 2-3 hours.

That's not me.
By Cameron's own words, The Terminator was heavily inspired by Carpenter's Halloween, but with robots.

Aliens and First Blood Part II are effectively the same plot but with aliens kicking US Marine butt instead of the Viet Cong.

Terminator 2 was just a repeat of the first movie with Arnold taking Biehn's role and higher production values.

Titanic was Romeo & Juliet laid over a historical setting.

And for all the comparisons to Fern Gully and Dances With Wolves, I found that the Avatar movies have more thematic and narrative similarities to Ray Bradbury's The Martian Chronicles.

As an aside, I do hope somebody ends up making a metal replica of the RDA-issued Avatar knives. I like the look.
