Assassins creed Ezio costume upgrade

Hey all, this is my first post to the RPF, I thought you guys might want to see my costume. The bulk of what I'm going to post at first has no "making-of" shots, but I'm working on upgrading it. The new stuff will have detailed progress pics. I made an Ezio costume 3 or 4 years ago, in fact I started making it before the game came out. The only part of it I was ever unsatisfied with was the leather. I used a vinyl fake leather backed with felt, as I was not confident with working in leather. After some experience with leather, I'm ready to give it another shot! This will be very pic heavy, and I have even more pics if anyone wants more detail.

Here is the initial product, before any additional work. The tunic, cape, skirts, and undershirt were all sewn from scratch. The belt and other hardware are sculpted from Fimo.

The glove is a leather work glove extended by a piece of vinyl. The blades came from a collapsible Tai Chi sword. The vambraces are vinyl glued on a substrate of templating plastic, with Fimo sculpted on top.

The greaves are vinyl backed with felt, and the straps are also vinyl. It actually looks pretty good when it's on.

An up close view of the vambraces.

The belt. Particularly proud of this piece, props have to be given to my mother, who is an artist. She sculpted the majority of this piece. It is Fimo, sculpted on a tin backing. The tine backing is then mounted on a steel plate cut to shape, for structure, The buckles and straps are attached to the steel plate, so it is a functional piece.

The belt is, ultimately, completely impractical. This is my best interpretation of the buckle layout on the back. The D-rings will be replaced with actual buckles in the upgrade.

IMG_0615.jpg

The first step in my upgrade was the belt. I detached the old belt pieces.

Here you can see the construction of the buckle.

IMG_0622.jpg

From top down: the original vinyl piece, the denim piece cut out for sizing, a practice leather piece cut out, and the final pattern traced out on new leather.

The final cut out pieces.

IMG_0625.jpgIMG_0626.jpg

The edges are wetted and slicked down, for a nice finished look.

IMG_0627.jpgIMG_0631.jpg

The leather goes in behind the buckle and turns around, so I wet the leather where it must bend, and clamp it and let it dry.

Continuing...

IMG_0639.jpgIMG_0634.jpg

Here is the buckle with leather attached! Next, for some hardware...

IMG_0641.jpgIMG_0642.jpgIMG_0643.jpgIMG_0644.jpg

Now the belt is wearable!

IMG_0646.jpgIMG_0647.jpgIMG_0649.jpg

Now to get those loose flaps of leather under control:

IMG_0652.jpgIMG_0651.jpgIMG_0650.jpgIMG_0653.jpg

IMG_0657.jpgIMG_0655.jpgIMG_0658.jpg

This is as far as I can go on the belt, until I get the boots, so I can match the dye. Next up: spaulder!

Next up, I decided to make the spaulder. I went with the leather armour in the game that has inlay in it. I think it's called the Helmschmied armour.

IMG_0586.jpgIMG_0596.jpgIMG_0597.jpg

This is again vinyl, and the "inlay" is sewn into it. It is glued onto a piece of templating plastic.

IMG_0662.jpg

First order of business was to redo the shape of the spaulder. The first time I made it, I was going on the promotional picture of Ezio in a newspaper. I never even saw the back of the costume until after the costume was done! So now that I have the game for reference, I was able to make a much better template.

IMG_0663.jpgIMG_0664.jpgIMG_0665.jpg

The edges were slicked down, and the pattern drawn on in chalk. The pattern is taken directly from the video game.

IMG_0666.jpgIMG_0667.jpgIMG_0669.jpgIMG_0670.jpg

The pattern is traced with a swivel knife, wetted, and pressed down with a butter knife.

IMG_0672.jpgIMG_0671.jpgIMG_0673.jpg

The straight line are meant to be different section of the armour, I think. I pressed a hard line with the edge of the butter knife, and went over it with the round end of the edge finishing tool. This gave it a nice segmented look. Unfortunately, my studies will keep me busy until christmas break, but I will update then, on my progress!

Thanks guys! I'm looking forward to getting it all done. Right now I'm working on altering the mechanism on the toy wrist blade replica to work with a wrist action...

Here's an update. Been really busy lately with school, so I haven't worked as much as I wanted to. But I have the spaulder dyed, riveted, and cape attached!

IMG_2146.jpgIMG_2148.jpgIMG_2149.jpgIMG_2150.jpg

Dying the spaulder! I used cordovan leather dye, and at first I tried to do a light-ish coat. As you can see, the colour went on a little splotchy, which is what always happens with leather dye. You have to get it pretty inundated for it to get nice and even. So I did another coat:

IMG_2226.jpgIMG_2227.jpg

I liked the look of that much better. While I was dying the spaulder, it was time for the belt to get dyed as well:

IMG_2159.jpg

Next up: hardware!

Now for the hardware on the spaulder, and re-attaching the cape. The previous design was good, just D-rings riveted on with flaps of leather, and the cording attached to that.

IMG_2228.jpgIMG_2229.jpg

Now to attach the cape, more rivets! A thin strip of leather on the other side sandwiches the cape in, and the strip is riveted to the spaulder.

IMG_2231.jpgIMG_2230.jpg

Here it is in action:

IMG_2232.jpgIMG_2233.jpgIMG_2234.jpg

The cording will be replaced eventually. Next I started on the grieves.

Now for the greaves. These are the same thick leather as the spaulder, my idea being that these are meant to be armour, not just part of his boots. These will go on over whatever pair of boots I buy for this costume. I started by cutting the leather oversized, soaking it in water, and seran-wrapping it to my leg, to get the right shape in.

IMG_2538.jpgIMG_2537.jpg

Note the bubbles from the leather: leather soaks up a lot of water!

Unfortunately, I didn't remember to get a pic of the seran-wrapping.

IMG_2548.jpgIMG_2547.jpg

The greaves are then hung to dry. After drying, I trimmed them to size. Since I didn't know exactly where those cuts would be, and where the centre line would end up eventually, I only cut the detail into the front after it was dry.

IMG_2528.jpgIMG_2533.jpgIMG_2529.jpg

Details of the cutting, and smoothing the edges:

IMG_2535.jpgIMG_2531.jpgIMG_2536.jpgIMG_2532.jpg

Then it was dyed:

Next I'll be working on the straps and hardware for the greaves. I'll also be making another post (hopefully sometime this summer) about casting the buckle pieces in aluminum, as soon as I can make it work! I'm also abandoning the toy wristblade, in favour of designing my own dual-action spring assisted wristblade in aluminum, and getting that laser-cut. I'm working from a tutorial video on imdeepainreborn's youtube channel, so I'm hesitant to make a post here, since it's not 100% my own work. I've edited his design a little bit, but if you want one of these, you're better off going to his youtube channel. Also I think he sells them. More updates as they happen!
