In the stores, that is...

I was in Walmart the other day and saw them in they toy section; didn't really take a close look, but noticed that it has a moveable visor, and a couple of buttons on the right side presumably for movie sound FX... My first thought was, "That'd make a good base for a sci fi helmet..." :love

Since it's aimed at kids, the size is no doubt on the smallish side, but widening it shouldn't be too difficult; I was thinking a poor man's X Wing helmet base for instance...

Anyone have or seen one up close? what do you think?

Thanks WC for hosting!

.. A poor man with a lot of time on his hands, or who does not care about accuracy. Building the visor cover and mohawk for an X-wing helmet would require quite some effort, especially if you want to keep the visor.
The real X-wing helmet was based on a pilot's helmet, and these usually have wide cheeks - something that other types of helmets don't have. It will not look right, even with a visor cover and mohawk.

I have seen it mentioned in some other thread (on another board?) as a possible base for a simplified child's X-wing helmet, though.

Btw, the real helmet was found.

I know that the real helm was an APH-6B, but for those of us less than financially secure, a close proximity would suffice... I mean Hell, I gotta handfuul of tools could come up with maybe an X wing pilot, minus $$$ for other expenses...

I think it raises all kinds of cool custom sci-fi helmet possibilities, but an X-Wing helmet isn't one of them. I think it would be an awful lot of work adding a mohawk and ram's horns to this thing, only to end up with something that still looks waaay off.

If folks can build Boba helmets (that turn out pretty nice) starting with cardboard then anything is possible.:thumbsup
It would be a heap of work for an x-wing, but at least it is a base, better then a complete scratchbuild. If I would going to build my own X and put in that much work I would probably use the cheap Rubies for the base.
This does have potential for the base for just about any helmet if the size is not too small, so good suggestion.

I suppose it's fair to say, better to start with something and work your way up than to start with nothing at all....

Why make a visor cover when you can get a real one for $20 here http://www.flighthelmet.com/mm5/mer...&Product_Code=MSHP-570-464&Category_Code=FHAC

Interesting note; due to the massive amounts of reflections being added, for a good majority of the film, the prop was filmed sans visor, with just tracking dots.
