any tutorials on how to build a "in case of" box?

In other words, one of those boxes that has something like a fire extinguisher that says "IN CASE OF FIRE BREAK GLASS".

I have a few ideas, and want to see if it is feasible to make a few of these.

I can't seem to find a tutorial, and the actual boxes themselves are pretty $$$.

Any tips on lettering or anything is greatly welcome. Completely new field for me to play with :)

no real need to have a tutorial, find one you can measure, all you will need in the way of tools is a table saw, build like you were making a picture frame only bigger and wider, sandpaper, filler puddy, glue and be sure to cut the channels for the plexiglass and you are done probably in as little as a few hours.

Most buildings, especially older ones, will probably have one of these boxes holding either a fire extinguisher, or an axe. Like Starfighter said - just go measure one, or get the basic idea of how they were constructed. If not wood, they're probably aluminum.

Y'know that obvious thing that stares you right in the face, that you never seem to notice?

Yea.. this was it.

There are a few buildings around here with the "IN CASE OF" boxes in em, and damned if it never occured to me to actually go in there and measure em.

Probably going the wood route, just gotta figure out a good door style to hold some plexiglass.

Tips on the lettering would be appreciated though :)

For the lettering, I'd be tempted to get vinyl letters cut from some sign shop. They'd probably even apply them to your glass for you.

If you want them painted on, I'd silk screen them. It can be done at home but with all the mess and supplies, once again I'd let professional do it!

For vinyl letters, what design format do they need to be sent in normally? Adobe Illustrator or what?

I have some specific signs I want "printed" for lack of a better term, and the sign shops down here are not so great about actually doing work for people who don't have a business.

As long as they have the font you are using, any vector based program such as AI should work. If not convert the fonts to curves and save it out or send them the font too. It depends on what program the sign shop uses. I use Flexi Sign.

Most hardware stores carry pre-cut vinyl letters. And, if you have a Hobby Lobby nearby, they carry a lot of different kinds of them. Different sizes, fonts, colors, etc.

Are you looking for an accurate box or just something for fun?

Michaels has a bunch of different shadow boxes where the plex front slide out on grooves.

Any Banner/Sign shop can probably do transferable vinyl letters for you.

Fun mostly. A friend and I came up with some weird random things we wished were in those emergency boxes, like "In case of sobriety, Bust glass" and have a beer stored in there, or "In case of xenomorph, break glass" and have a bottle of pepto in there. Just random wacky things.

I wanted to make one, but have it be more... realistic looking? while keeping that "break glass" part involved.

I called around to a few sign shops, but I guess I have to make the box first, then get the lettering done.

Appreciate the help :)

I had a great uncle that was going in for an operation where they transplanted a pig's heart valve into him. While he was still in the hospital I found a small Plastic box, put a stuffed pig inside and then added the little hammer (from a extinguisher company) and laser printed "ACME Heart Valve Replacement Kit" graphics all over it. It was a big hit with family and hospital staff alike!

I don't forsee a mad bidding war for these, so here you go-
