Gone but not forgotten.
Anyone have any idea where to find some really interesting harness buckles, circa 1940s? I'm slowly cooking up an original design Rocketman sort of costume for the local convention this summer, and need something cool to hold my jetpack up. :D

Thanks!

I'm gearing up to do some Rocketeer buckles, so keep an eye out for that. I'd be up for doing an original design also if you had something specific in mind.

No, nothing in particular in mind, just something chunky and retro looking. My buddy Gene had the idea a few months ago, that our local bunch should cook up a group or Golden Age superheros for the big summer convention this year. He's going to be the mysterious labcoated and goggled, Professor Voltaic, and I'm going to be Wolfgang Von Luft, AKA "Der Buzz Bomb" who fled Germany before WWII with his amazing jet pack designs :D

This is going to be a super cheap project just for fun. My jetpack is probably going to be a pair of 2 liter cola bottles w/ added nose cones. :lol

A few years ago a friend did Captain Proton, and got a vintage buckle at a military show, or maybe I found it at Oshkosh.... huh. I don't remember now. Probably he got it at the mil show. He had a welding friend modify it to be a bit more accurate.

Would a horse shop have something interesting? There are a few riding and farm stores in our area that have all sorts of belts and buckles. I can't think of any that look as cool as Real Old Airplane stuff, but I'm not a horse gear expert.

A few years back we did a rocketpack and needed a cool buckle for the harness. We went to a a racing supply store... they sell stock car racing supplies. We got a racing harness buckle for about $80. A bit pricey for making a convention costume, but we weren't paying for it, the client was. It was for a advertising spot so the money didn't matter much as long as it looked good.

I second the race car buckle idea. If you have a local track, you should check there and see if any teams will be getting rid of their old hardware. Most racing divisions require the harness be replaced every few years and most seasons are just starting.
