Wrong pilot if you're going for accuracy...

More panels have been done .. thought it would be cool to see it in daylight!
Again, any comments on how way off I am are more than welcome before I seal this bird! Wrong colors, wrong panel shape .. hit me with anything you see.

Let's say, I'm going as accurate as I can manage

There's just so many wrongs right now:
-Cockpit is the 1:1
-Wrong pilot
-Lights!
-Wings block is closer to body (pyro style IIRC)

But at least, I'm trying to stick to an as good as possible paint scheme! Anything else?

Thanks TK, it's my pleasure to share back and try to enlighten and maybe even help others that will find a V3 to build at some point! I don't get as many attentions as when I first began working on this 18 months ago but at least, I'm trying to keep the WIP alive as long as I can .. I plan on finishing it very soon!

Ok well you're doing great. Just be mindful of the original color pallet ILM used and you're results will be great. Floquil IS the ANH ILM paint scheme...

When Mike first announced this model, I'm like dude you need to offer X&Y for the SS purists... Bless his heart as he did. He understood the mentality of us nutters... lol
It's a beautiful model and incorporated with the aluminum armature... fantastic!

My V3.1 is currently enroute from Mike, I'm hoping that it will be here early next week - but I have promised myself that I won't start it until I've finished the FM 1:72nd Falcon, then the lifesized Yoda.
Well, OK, maybe I could do just a little work on it...

You're right on. My major challenge is to mix colors to look good. That and the fact I don't have good refs for the paint job .. I'll survive!

I read about the Floquile yes .. too bad I didn't have access to the Floquil line of paint here. It's illegal in Canada so nobody have them in stock! :angry

You'll have a wonderful time working on this kit. I loved it from day one when I received it .. and I'm real proud of where it is now! Don't imagine you can just do a little on it .. as soon as you'll begin pumping the knife around the kit .. you will forget about all other projects around ..

Right now, I have an unfinished Zorg EV-9D9 on the shelf, a Nisen ROTJ AT-ST and I sold my Zorg CZ-1 to another board member here cause I figured I wouldn't get to it with all the other projects I was seeing coming! :love

More work done tonight ... all the blue has been shot .. it's way more blue than grey here and a little too dark for my taste .. but at this point, I'll soften it up with white overshoot later in the process .. I think?!

Your build looks great! It's giving me a lot of pointers as I have also selected this kit as my first major resin endeavor. Can I ask how you achieved the candy striping on the laser cannons? This seems like it's going to be a head scratch for me.

I just cut a tape at 6-7mm wide. and rolled it around the canon up to the step. Applied some mask at certain spot and shot with the airbrush! Voila!

Thanks for the tip. For some reason I had pictured myself trying to airbrush a straight line while twirling the cannon. Don't ask me why...

I just cut a tape at 6-7mm wide. and rolled it around the canon up to the step. Applied some mask at certain spot and shot with the airbrush! Voila!

When using only one masking tape, it takes some time and attention to get a constant and regular width of the blue stripe.
I get excellent results when using 2 tapes with the same width:

Just roll 2 tapes lying next to each other around the tube. Start somewhere on the middle of the tube and then roll them towards both ends. So you can put on both tapes next to each other. Make sure that there are no gaps between them and that there is no overlapping (this is easy). After removing one tape (= the tape representing the blue stripe) you have a nice regular (uniform) mask with a constant width.

If you are to lazy to figure out the required width by experimenting you can also calculate the required width of your masking tapes with the following formula:
W ... required width of the tapes
D ... diameter of the tube
L ... length of the tube
N ... total number of stripes when looking from the side (white stripes + blue stripes)
PI … 3.141592654

W = L/N x 1/{SQR[ {(2xL)/(PIxNxD)}^2 + 1 ]}

With this technique the blue stripe has the exact same width as the (remaining) white stripe.
Some people prefer that the width of the blue stripe is a little smaller than the width of the (remaining) white stripe. To achieve this, just cut the tape for the blue a little bit more narrow and the masking tape for the (remaining) white stripe a little bit (the exact same amount) wider.

I wouldnt use this technique for the wing markings as the red markings are wider than the spacings.

Yep .. pretty nice tip! I did it by eyes .. counting the stripes though I was seeing on my ref pics.

While I'm there, I'd also like to thank everyone that built this bird before me .. I'm thinking REL, Dymerski, Meyer and all the references pics I've stolen from your threads. It might not be the most accurate paint job out there .. but it will certainly have been researched .. and I'm so tired of looking at pics!!! argg
