Another Kill Bill Bride's Sword...

Hi Guys,

I've been busy working on V3 of the Bride's Sword from Kill Bill. It's getting near the end, so I figured I'd post up a few pics and learnings...

Learning #1 - It's not easy to put a nice fake temper line (hamon) on a blade. I tried a number of techniques (sandpaper, a number of wire brushes, ferric chloride), but nothing worked well. So, this sword has no hamon. My test blade, on the other hand, has about 6 crappy partial hamons:) Note to self - chrome doesn't react with Ferric Chloride.

Learning #2 - Probably a good idea to LockTite your setscrews on your CNC. My spindles chuck set screw came loose, and screwed up a test run engraving the lioness on a test scabbard (saya).

Anyhow, this ones almost done. Just need to carve the lioness into the saya, tie on the sageo, and done.

It's got a couple of inaccuracies, though. It's missing the large Emperor node in the rayskin of the handle (tsuka), and, of course, the hamon is not present. Other than those, I think it's very close.

Thanks,
jason

looks pretty freaking sweet to me....feel free to send it to me for x-mas lol!

good job man! ;)

did you say chrome? you plated the blade?
what is it made of?

did you make this entire sword or is it a mod of existing parts?

Thanks guys,

Blade is chrome-plated zinc/aluminum alloy, like the OP. It's still chrome-plated (except for where the engraving is, of course).

I don't make swords - I assemble, detail and wrap them. That's enough for me at this point:) It's a lot of work getting the end result to come out nicely - the Japanese sword has a lot of details that you need to pay attention to.

Most parts on this sword are either same-as-originals or cast from same-as-original parts. All are from Japan, except for the ones I have made (or make) locally.

Thanks,
jason

Finally finished this one up. Had to sculpt/mold/cast the kojiri (scabbard end cap) because the one I had didn't fit. It didn't fit because I carved the lioness in the wrong place, and had to switch to a new saya, which was slightly larger (1-2 mm or so) than the original one. 6 weeks later...:)

Anyhow, it's done. Used Sculpey III to do the kojiri sculpt, and it was VERY brittle after baking. I'll be trying Premo or Fimo the next time I need to do something like this. Also, the shape of the kojiri was no fun to mold, upturned hooks and hollow middle...and I ran out of silicone 7/8's of the way through the first pour, and had to start over... lots of fun:)

Thanks,
jason

What's up JBlakey. This is Byron. Man I love your replica of the Kill Bill Brides sword. This is the closes replica of the movie I've seen on the web. I ordered a brides sword from Hanzo swords and have been disappointed since. It is nothing like the movie. I seen other versions on the web for sale that were missing fittings and the lion was engraved. In the movie the lion is embossed not engraved. And they are charging from $200.00 - $600.00. Yours are perfect. If you had one for sale I would buy it from you. But, it has to be battle ready, razor sharp and clay tempered. If you could make one I would buy it from you. My E-Mail is bhill0531@yahoo.com.

If have none for sale then tell me how to make one look like yours. What did you buy to construct it and where can I buy the materials to construct one of my own.

Byron, read this thread:
SBG Sword Forum ? View topic - New Project - an accurate Kill Bill Bride's sword...

I can't open it from this link. It gets a error message.

That's because that forum (the Sword-Buyers-Guide forum) is down today, sorry. It should be back up soon. It's not an issue with the link.

Basically, Jason tracked down and ordered the accurate parts for the sword from Japan, and used a homemade CNC mill to add details to the blade and saya. It could absolutely be done with a functional sharp (or "battle ready" blade, to use old sword-hocking buzzwords), and he's done it before, I believe with a clay-tempered blade from Huawei. Cheers.

Hi Guys,
sorry, I've been on vacation or I'd of replied earlier. Thanks for filling in, Lunaman:)

Actually, I'm currently (slightly) working on converting a Kris Cutlery 26a into a Brides sword. It's not a razor, but it'll cut stuff. Super tough blade, I've heard.

I'll be electro-etching the foo-dog on the blade, my CNC just won't work/v-carve with this kinda hard-hard steel. It's tough to even drill the mekugi-ana in these suckers. Aluminum is so much nicer for that:)

There is another thread where I detailed the steps I went though on building my first Bride's sword...

For your fake temper line you can try sandblasing using aluminum oxyde media, and using some wax or paste to protect the lustered areas, the paste will remove a bit, and it willcreate a progressive transition between shiny and glazed zones, then, once you have finished the sandblasting you can buffer a bit the edge, to soften the sandblasting.

I'm actually trying to get the fitting parts (fuchi kashira with momij design) no way to find them, tried several suppliers and japanese websites, I will try to contact Yamato Bidogu, but not sure they still have some.
In fact I am not plannign to use them, just if these are the same than used at screen, I want to carve a pair myself, but with most accuracy, and having a real in hand would help...

I had a hard time tracking down that set of Fuchi/Kashira - it was a special order, and that was about 3-4 years ago now (i think)... So I might have gotten the last set they had on hand.

I'm going to try casting them in resin shortly, though.

Thanks,
jason

can be interesting, because I just need the exact pattern, only if these are identical to screen used ones, if not, I can make a free pattern from photos, but I admit il looks very similar so I assume it's the exact same fuchi-kashira set.
I made some searches about the lion design, found 3 different ones in movie and propotion pictures.
I think I will use the one on black background, and used one from screenshot for additionnal details.
I amso made searches about the blade itself, because on some photos I think it's a real blade, meaning with real hamon and real hada, and probably the lion is a real horimon.
made close up screenshots of the blade, when Hanzo gives saber to Bride and when she takes the katana when she fights against the 88, it looks like something close to a real hamon, even I think it's a alloy iiaito blade, wih complicated two layers fake hamon pattern, looks really close to real on screen.

I have one screen used hero blade, from movie "into the sun", blade and it's really impressive.
The technic is mixed used sandblasting, and hand buffering using fine grit, several lines direction to make a kind of illusion depending on light directions.
Some areas get lighter and other get darker.
Stunt blades are made from aluminum coated light wood, very light, and real habaki on both, habaki looks really similar to the ones used in Kill bill movie so I think it's provided by same company (probably japanese made stuff)

Here's a few pics of the originals...

Thanks,
jason
