10+ years too late to the party - Creating my own Hattori Hanzo Bride Katana from "Kill Bill"

You made a great job so far, excited to see the following results....

I think I will try to spray paint gold the two lines on the saya. Mine comes with two lines which are more of a mustard color !!! For the kojiri, I still don't know.....I still think I will buy the black brass which is cheaper and paint the gold accents !!!

And I don't know where I will find that brass ring to put around the saya.....I asked Adam on his Youtube video but he never answered......too busy of course :)

Thank you very much for your pics (y)

My fuchi and kashira showed up today so I am now tasked with taking my handle apart and attempting to rewrap it.

Wish me luck!

Rewrapping the tsuka was a success! It's not the best job but it is a serviceable job. I took the handle to my sander to try to give it a more hourglass shape before the rewrap.

This project is about 90% done now. The sword itself is complete; I need to finish up the Saya. For the Saya I have now, I still need to make the koiguchi reinforcement bit. I am also curious to see how the other Saya I commissioned will turn out. If it turns out better than what I made and fits the sword, then I'll swap over. Either way, this is basically it for now.

Greetings Everyone!

After recently watching the video that Adam Savage had posted 2 years ago on Tested.com regarding his replica of the Bride's katana from "Kill Bill;" I was reminded that I too have a cheap, $60 dollar stainless steel replicate I bought back in 2008. After realizing how horribly inaccurate my katana was, I felt compelled to try to create myself a more accurate replacement for my collection. This led to hours of searching the internet.

Down the rabbit hole we go. . .

After searching, I realized that no one makes an accurate replica for sale. There have been some created here on the RPF, but that is about it. That led me to the conclusion that I will have to try to replicate what Jason Blakey had done for his replica. Going down his path though leads to some challenges. First, the fuchi kashira used on the screen used props appears to have been discontinued almost 10 years ago and are extremely difficult to find. Second, I do not have a CNC machine to complete the engraving myself on an accurate Japanese Iaito blade.

Because of these barriers to entry, I have to take a slightly different route. I would have to purchase an already created sword then modify it to be more accurate. After scouring the internet, I found one on eBay that I felt I could work with. It is a T10 spring steel blade that has been differentially hardened. This particular sword has many inaccuracies; but I purchased it for a few reasons. First, I liked the quality of the Foo Dog on the blade. Second, it had the most accurate fuchi kashira on the tsuka that I could find. Lastly, they let me modify the sword slightly by getting a real leather ito wrap and allowed me to swap out the inaccurate saya for a plain, gloss black one at no extra cost. I also liked the quality of the real hamon on the blade.

My plan is to replace some of the fittings on the sword, and then do my best to create an accurate saya from the plain black one that will be coming with the sword. This means I will need to take a stab at trying to carve the imagery into the saya myself, by hand. These are the fittings that I was able to source for this build. The kojiri is a 3D print designed by Jason Blakey that I am having printed in brass, then chemically aging myself.

I also purchased some mylar tape for the sides of the saya and a 6mm ring that I will need to shape to fit onto the saya.
My biggest worry is the carving of the symbols into the saya. I feel that replacing hardware on the tsuka itself won't be hard, unless I end up having to rewrap the leather myself to get the menuki on there. We will see once I get the sword within a month.

In the end, I hope I can get somewhere close to this.

Wish me luck! I will post updates as all the parts show up and I start on my adventure.
Looks great. Most of us that practice Japanese swordsmanship and collect quality swords know that most of the swords on ebay and other sites are not what they claim to be and are usually very cheap steel and fittings and not high carbon steel. A sword made in Japan with official registration papers cost around $3000-$7000 then at least 30 days of waiting before they can ship it. The best choice for me was to buy from one of the well-known Chinese forges like Ryansword, Paul Chen Hanwei,Dragon King,Citadel, Ronin Katana.Sheng Sword and a few others that make swords by hand but cost much less since they are in China and make them in small batches. I never thought anything Chinese-made would be quality and strong but these handful of swordsmiths are really making good swords but I would not trust any others. $300-$600 will get what they call a entry-level cutter made with 1095-T-10 steel and looks amazing. Swords of Northshire has great swords you can customize but all their products come from Ryansword and you can buy directly from them for half the price. Ryansword will engrave any symbol into the blade or saya like they did for me..Ryansword is where both of my Kill Bill swords came from but they still needed extra features to be screen accurate and that is part of the challenge. My total cost for the first one was only $350 and it cuts very good, as Sonny Chiba would say. I felt that was so cheap I ordered another one with a higher quality of steel and better quailty fittings along with the brass ring and cap for the saya.RS helped me create GoGos Tanto but that was easy. I used pictures from The Prop Store since they sold one of the actual swords in the movie. My next sword build is the shirasaya that ORen-IshiI used and GoGos meteor hammer ball and chain GungFu weapon then the Highlander katana and then Stormshadows wakizashi and katana.

FINALLY got photos of the Saya that Swords of Northshire etched for me. It has taken them a while and I have had to harass them via email about once a month to get updates. I believe because it is just a Saya and not a whole sword, my order probably wasn't as significant as others; but that is just speculation on my part. Here are the photos they sent me this morning. Hopefully I will have it within the month. As long as my sword fits into it, I will then finish modifying it with the ring, end cap, brass sides, and the reinforced koiguchi.

At least in the photos, it looks like they did a good job. I will update once I get the Saya.

FINALLY got my new saya in for my sword. They did a good job with the carvings. I transitioned my hardware from my old saya to the new one. This is pretty much done except for the reinforcement for the koiguchi that I still need to make.

Their carving is cleaner. But yours is more accurate.
