Another ANH stormtrooper helmet found.

All,

Possibly old news to some but if you are interested pop over to the RPB and check out this thread on a new ANH stormtrooper helmet.

http://p083.ezboard.com/ftheukproppartyfrm...icID=1757.topic

The helmet appears to be screen identified according to Dacrates on the RPB :thumbsup

According to the people who have seen better high resolution pics it is the stormtrooper seen next to the 'set for stun' stormtrooper the one without cheek tube stripes.

So I think this is the same helmet without tube stripes famously used in the publicity still with another trooper when firing at Luke and Leia when they swing with the grapple line in the death star. And also the same image used on the original 12 back stormtrooper action figure card. If anybody knows that for a fact please chime in.

Cheers Chris.

The lofts of Borehamwood hide many treasures.
:cry :cry :cry

I am so jealous I can't express it in words.

As someone on the RPB commented, it would be a great one to cast as it has already been taken apart.

Another HDPE helmet - Still no ABS helmets discovered.
Is there a possibility that AA made all the helmets in HDPE and just the hero helmets in ABS?
I know he remembers making them out of ABS but it was a long time ago...

I think it`s pretty certain that the 50 stunt were HDPE and the 6 hero were ABS.

I'm guessing the same Ben, esp with what has turned up so far but why make the Armor out of ABS and not the helmets?

The reason the helmets were HDPE and not ABS is probably because of the deep undercuts on the helmet making it hard to get ABS off the mold without splitting the plastic. I think Gino came up with that idea a while back.
Or maybe the helmets were made before any ABS arrived and all that was available was HDPE?

Keith.

Looking cool. Man... it really WOULD be interesting with another cast to choose from.

Nice find. The owner must be a real happy camper... :thumbsup

I think everyone gave up hope a long time ago of finding an ABS stunt :lol Bottom line is AA got it wrong. IMO there's nothing mysterious or deceitful about it, he just got it wrong

I think the reason they were made of HDPE (when they had all that ABS lying around) was they were unable to get the same undercut on the helmets when using ABS, plus there's the troublesome male/female/male section on the back of the helmet. I've been looking at a lot of Hero pics recently and they seem to have a lot less undercut (plus they only needed 6 so could maybe afford to take their time over them)

Cheers

I personally don't think any helmets were made from ABS,it just doesn't make sense to me.I mean, the armour was formed so nice so why not just use the same material for the helmets.I don't buy this rubber modified ABS thing, more like LDPE or some other off the shelf plastic.I could be wrong but that's just my theory. The HDPE is so more flexible than ABS it's a perfect choice for getting them off a difficult shaped mould, although harder to form they would release with no damage.

To see how flexible those helmets were, freeze frame that trooper that runs out for the Falcon and takes a dive. His helmet becomes oblong when it hits the ground. :lol

I'm not sure what your saying

I'm saying.....
The armour was white ABS
The Stunt helmets were painted HDPE
The Hero helmets were white ABS

Are you saying that you think the Hero helmets were also painted HDPE ?

Cheers

Didn't the story go that SDS had some HDPE lying around from making fishponds, or something?

To see how flexible HDPE is pick up a shampoo bottle (VO5 shampoo is a great example in the UK) turn it over and read the bottom recycle symbol which says HDPE then squeeze the bottle :p . Funny type of plastic no wonder it didn't take paint well.

Chris.

Jez, I remember you adamently disagreeing with me about what type of plastic was used for what items. I'm very glad to see you've come around to my way of thinking and agreeing with my assessments. I've been saying that (hdpe-stunts, abs-heros, armor, and TIE's) ever since AA came on the scene all those years ago. Had you listened to me then, it could have saved for a lot of insults, flaming, and pointless bickering.

Either way, I think it's good that the record be set straight.

Alas, I am a credit junkie.
I was the first to pose this assessment, as well as all the cap/backs having the texture/bumps and it being part of the mold.

I don't know why but I'm suddenly picturing that scene in MIB when Will Smith opens the locker room door.
