Is the Black Series Stormtrooper helmet good as a 501st costume?

I bought one on sale because it was a good deal and I have no impulse control. I'm not in the 501st, but from chatting with friends who are they say 'no', but I found this thread that describes how to get it very close.

It will not pass 501st approval, with out serious modification..

But it’s a fun helmet to have around the house!

I always think it depends on what you want and what you expect others to think.

The TBS helmet is good and affordable, but it needs modification to be 501st approved. Other helmets are going to be more accurate, but also more expensive. So if you’re looking for something accurate with no mods, it’s an easy decision to go secondary market; however, if you’re looking to just display a helmet, the TBS helmet works for that perfect.

I can guarantee outside of this forum, the vast majority of people who see either version will know it’s a stormtrooper helmet and that’s about it!

Completely agree, my BS stuff is what I use when guests come over. I let them touch and wear those.. the real helmets stay behind glass

Same. Or for doing photo fun like a Pooltrooper. Not using the accurate lids for that stuff.

RS and CFO remain the most accurate Stormie helmets. But there are other reasonably accurate helmets for less money. It's up to you, your budget and your OCD in the end, what helmet do you want to own and wear.

The Stormtroopers in Rogue 1 wear an idealised armour and helmet, with many details different from the original trilogy. It is symmetric blend of stunt and hero. The ears are different. The vocoder is made of separate black tubes and the grey details are separate pieces with straight vents. The tube stripes are now recessed straight holes with blue behind them instead of curved blue lines.

The Black series Stormtrooper helmet is based on the Rogue 1 helmet but simplified to make it a toy. The grey details and the vocoder have lost definition, so they are mid-way between those on the the OT and R1 helmets.
The undercut under the chin is cut short, making the rubber trim under the chin visible from the front and sides.
The way the front and back halves connect is weird, and the overall construction is different.
The back of the helmet is thick, containing a battery door on the outside and a speaker grille, making the helmet sit too far forward on the head. The brow trim is white plastic on the underside.

The overall size and shape, and the location and size of the trapezoids is similar to OT helmets though, but the corners are straighter. The tube stripes are still recessed.
The plastic does not contain much pigment: it is slightly translucent. A modded helmet would need to be painted.

I would be surprised if there weren't resin-casts of modded helmets available: If you want a R1 helmet then that would be a better starting point than modding a Black Series.
If you want an original trilogy helmet: then something with lineage to a screen-used would be better. RS Props is the go-to source these days.

Black Series helmets have been spotted on The Mandalorian, ... as a background prop: helmets on spikes.

I started modding one to make it my own interpretation of how an idealised Stormtrooper helmet should me.
Modding it gave me cancer.
