ANH Vader "Mystery" Helmet update

About the black helmet issue with Prowse...two possiblities. We know that the original ANH was painted all black (then gunmetal highlights added later)...and then for ROTJ the gunmetal looks pretty dark...so to Prowse he might be thinking about that or that "original" in the UK means "first" so that he's saying the first original helmet he wore was all black. Maybe he's got something against the gunmetal highlights? It's still baffling to me he misses this obvious change to the helmet.

As I said earlier I didn't want to hijack PS thread so maybe this could be moved.

As I said earlier I'm sure there was debate about this not being screen used :lol .

As for Prowse, well I'm sure he is a nice bloke but anyone who has read "from the forces mouth" knows that some things he says asbout the Vader costume are inaccurate.

I'd totally agree with that. I don't think that anyone at LFL has scrutinized the Vader (or any other) helmet as much as we (collectively) have here. If they had, I'm sure that the ROTS helmet wouldn't look like it does. :p

Yep, in the Star Wars timeline the ROTS Vader helmet should share more features with the ANH Vader helmet, and yet it has the large chin vent and glossy paint-job of ESB and ROTJ :confused
And let's not even mention the big long ostrich neck and symmetrical faceplate?. WTF?
I understand that the helmet / costume could've evolved over the time period (18-odd years?) between ROTS and ANH, but the Vader costume seems to have *de-volved* if that makes sense?. :rolleyes

Continuity in the costume department at LFL is weak to say the least.... anyone remember the Special Edition Sandtroopers that looked more like ROTJ troopers than ANH?.

Cheers,
John

yes, all of what you said is what erks me the most about the PT... even worse than... dare i say... jar jar?

He was for KIDS.My children and nephews love him.Do you remember being a kid and you just liked silly stuff?Like EWOKS?Jar-Jar isn't my cup of tea either but let's not forget what his purpose was-to entertain children. All the prequels have their own merits and flaws.I like them but others don't which is perfectly understandable but after seven years isn't it time to give old Jar-Jar a break? :lol

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(GundamZeppelin @ Nov 29 2006, 02:15 AM) </div>
Even when i was a kid i hated EWOKS :angry

I was only a boy then too, and I HATED bloody Ewoks.

Sorry if I've offended anyone :lol

Partially my fault.Sorry.
As far as Prowse is concerned i suppose you have to remember that it was 30 years ago and he did spend most of the time inside the suit looking out.I can understand why he might miss some of the details that we have spent thirty years srutinising and agonising over.

If you are not told or aware of it, you might not notice it. It is of course more noticeable on the ANH, but with ESB & RotJ - if they used the type of paint that some people claim they were, it looks almost completely black, but black and silvery when in bright light. Or... it could be an honest mistake of remembering wrong... heck... one can't be expected to remember every little detail.

Just my 2 cents... and now we can get back to topic. :lol

It all depends on what dome was used. Its a shorter version for stunt a longer for screen close up.

Two things...before I make any suggestions...

Yep, in the Star Wars timeline the ROTS Vader helmet should share more features with the ANH Vader helmet, and yet it has the large chin vent and glossy paint-job of ESB and ROTJ
From the word GO...the LFL props department completely screwed the pooch on the ROTS helmet. Not only did this helmet have to "evolve" over 18 years, which they did a good job with on the TK's BTW, it actually did "devolve". They would have been proper to actually start with RM's design. THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN COOL. But shy of that...they could have started with the "exact" copy of the ANH, only nice and shiny brand spanking new...right off the shelves. It would explain why it was so beat up 18 years later. He was the enforcer in a dictatorship.

Two...I was 12 when ROTJ came out...I couldn't stand the Ewoks. He should have stuck with the original Wookie idea...which I might add would have worked out perfectly...the Wookies reclaiming their planet after the Empire took them over 30 years earlier.

Now...as to my suggestions if you please. Looking at the ANH and the Mystery Helm...specifically about the mouth. If you look at the vertical bars on the ANH, the spaces between them seem to be larger than on the Mystery. However, to change that, would be to make the bars themselves not as sturdy...which they do seem to be a correct match. If that's not clear, you'll have to excuse me...it's 0400 and I'm ready for the sack.

Oh...what the hell is a "wc"? That was mentioned a few pages...months back.

With all due respect to Prowse and his contribution to my favorite character of all time, he has a very fuzzy memory about all facets of that costume and even about some of the events of the filming......especially in ANH. For example, a good friend of mine spoke to him directly...........in a more casual setting outside of a convention once...........he asked him about the helmet specifically, Prowse explained how it was all black etc.....and knowing otherwise my buddy said you mean it was black and gray two toned right??? Prowse replied, no it was all black.......and even gave a reason why he remembered it...........then my buddy pulls out photos of the helmet on Prowse.......and Prowse says............you know you are right I do remember that now.......they changed it after we started filming.

Who knows what he really remembers after 30 years. The point is, he wore it, he didn't make it or decorate it. He mostly had help getting dressed for each scene as can be seen in the behind the scenes stills of him with parts of the costume on.

The guys who remember the most details about the OT film props were actually involved in the making process........the actors and walking mannequins can't be expected to remember that stuff. They were just working for a living in most cases.

Dave :)

From my limited measurement capabilities I have figured that the teeth are roughly 6mm and the spaces are roughly 8mm. Anyone with more precise measurement tools will be able to give you more accurate numbers.

I think that is a wonderful point Dave. Prowse certainly didn't scrutinize the helmet the way the prop makers would have. To them it was just another costume. Maybe if Prowse had known back then how big Vader would become he would have paid a little more attention to details. :)

Looking forward to seeing your new progress PS :thumbsup
