ANH Stormtrooper Helmet Project

Making some nice progress. More so on the armor than the helmet. I need to better my vacuum system before I attempt the helmet face piece. The link shows pictures of completed (some are not fully trimmed) armor, my vacuum table and oven, and helmet molds. The armor is not flawless, but I think that might add to the authenticity. Go easy, I'm still working out the bugs.

I have much better luck with HIPS than with ABS in my vac-forming rig. I suggest trying .080 HIPS [some vendors call it HIS] learn the vac forming basics with that, and then once you get some good pulls under your belt, then step up to the harder to form ABS.

Just my 2 cents worth. Your project is looking mighty fine.

I am going to take the advice to make the helmet out of 0.08 HIPS. I am much too new at this to keep messing up pcs of ABS. I want to continue with 0.09" or 0.125" ABS for the Armor though. In the mean time I have rebuilt my vac table to better tolerances and am trying to track down an abandoned tank. I can then seek a vac pump.

Well, after some time here is a finished prototype (compared to an FX on the left). The helmet was completely 0.090" ABS vacuum-formed. The eyes still need more definition, the correct trims added, correct areators added, blue stripes added, along with other refinements. The lenses turned out pretty good, they are a yellow safety glass overlayed onto a blue mirrored safety glass. I doubt it shows well in this photo. More photos are avaialbe here:

If you don't mind me saying this: this looks like a mix between the clone helmets and a stormtrooper helmet. I know that was probably not the intention... but I can't help but think clone.

I don't mind at all No Humor Man. Do you think it is too narrow? I could use the criticism, I'd like to get it right.

Hmm... doesn't look too narrow from what I can see: the top part looks good, but the lower part of the face is angled wrong and should be pulled more back at the bottom, which would also cause the ears to have to get pulled back some.

Cheers
