ANH R2-D2 Build (Weathered CS:R spec)

Well it wasn't easy, but I spent the last two months turning this into the Mandalorian version. I have to say I'm really pleased.

Looks great! Glad to see you finish this. Great job on the weathering too.

I do have to ask about those pegs on his shoulders. What are they supposed to be used for?

I just read your whole build report. Great work!
R2 is a labor of love, and always evolving. I compare it having a classic car - it's never really done.

Thanks! Yeah, he may be assembled, but he won’t ever really be done.

LOL, I just taped on some random bolts that were laying around.
Every time I think about them adding those in Mandalorian, I just get frustrated as to why they did it. Other than to get droid builders frustrated...

I have to assume that originally that R2 model was meant to support some sort of item on his shoulders (like the drink tray on Jabba’s Sail Barge) and the bolts were meant to serve as mounts for this item but ended up not being used.

That’s the only theory that makes any sense, but it’s weak as they weren’t there through all of ROTJ and were then removed before TFA.

Some were present on the droid in the Sandcrawler with Cobb Vance. And then they disappeared when they cut to the CGI version. Whoever had the idea to add them should be beaten.

Your mistake is assuming that there WAS planning going on. They just added stuff because they wanted to do something different.
"Let the fans figure out some justification for it".

Do you know something I don’t? Hint hint :p

I had wondered what was up with those studs! I wondered if they assisted in rocking him back and forth or something but that prob doesnt make any sense...

Just got this 1940’s Weston light meter. It’s a potential source for R2’s honeycombed PSI lens. I have to take it all apart and see what’s what.

This is exciting because most of Artoo’s parts were custom made. The very few confirmed found parts (like the Vickers Viscount lights) are incredibly hard to find.

I picked up an aluminum restraining bolt a few weeks back and installed that with some strong rare earth magnets. Weathered it up and I think it looks pretty cool.

I also put a Mandalorian style Scout Trooper badge on my tool bag. It’s an old gas mask bag I’ve had for years. Thought it could use a little Star Wars pizzazz. Oh, and I also replaced the center vents with metal ones.
