Anakin AOTC Saber

Im currently in the process of constructing a PVC "stunt" version of this saber. Since I've finaly reached a point where there is actualy something to photograph soon I figured that I could go ahead and start a thread on it :confused

I wanted to have something to duel with and since I've always liked this saber, so I decided to try and tackle it. I got the plans from The Sith Archives and used those to rough out the shapes and lengths. Since its going to be used for fighting, Im not too concerned with accuracy, but Im getting as close as I possibly can.

I based the saber around a 3/4th PVC pipe. Since PVC is measuered using the inside diameter, I figured up the rest using rough estimates of pipe thickness and such. The main body is made from 1in PVC and the shroud and band are made from 1 1/4. I used granitex scuplting compound and styrene sheet to build up the details, with Magic Sculpt as a seam filler. I'm still in the process of gather up other greebles for it and I need to figure out some way of constructing the grips.

I'll be spraying it with Krylon gloss black and then krylon chrome for a decent finish with some krylon ultra flat black for the band and other bits. I'll use enamals and acrylics for touch ups and slight weathering.

Im going to for a more used and lived look since its already quite rough. I'll post pictures tomorrow when I've finished sanding and shaping the main parts.

Building this saber to fight with, I have to say, Im shocked at how small it really is. I really dont see how it was even used in the movie. There is almost nowhere to hold it without something jabbing you in the hand.

Pics STAT.

I see you mentioned having something to duel with...

I've been making luxeon-powered lightsabers for about a year now, and I must say they are fairly robust. The blades are made of polycarbonate and are virtually indestructable. There are also no electronics in the blade, so you don't get the dark spots like fx lightsabers do.

Just something to consider if you want a lit dueling saber :)

I am anxious to see pictures, so post.

Well the original hero was 1.25" OD so that could be why it feels so tiny maybe. I'm not sure about the stunts though. Let's see some pics.

The stunts were the same

Well.... the pictures aren´t here to be seen yet, so we can´t comment on your Saber, but to second Frost´s comments, Luxeon Sabers are VERY sturdy and my friends and I have been kicking the living crap out of each other with them with no sign of them being even slightly damaged, so it´s a good thing for you, then :)

Okay, finished up enough to snap a few pics.
Right now its got a lot of masking tape on to keep the parts from sliding around and so that I can draw layout lines and have them stick.

The control box is made from blue Granitex scuplting compound. Its attached to the band with Liquid Nails. I covered it in styrene sheet and filled the gaps with Magic Sculpt. It has some pre-made holes so that I can drill it out to add screws later. That yellow peice of plastic in front is what I'll be using to simulate the 6 LED's in the control box. This is a cheap project using mostly parts and supplies I already have and I couldnt see buying 6 clear LED's just to glue inside this thing.

Here you can see the peice of styrene sheet I have to hold the LED's in place while the blade is removed.

Here's a shot of it next to the ESB Vader FX for scale comparison. The 3/4 PVC blade is attached for this pic.

I hope to finish sanding and filling the box ontop of the emitter tonight. I have one more peice to attach to the body and fill and sand, after that I'll work on the grips and the covertec clip. I've scrounged up most of the cosmetic peices (screws and rivets) but Im still looking for the knurled thumb screws. I was at Lowes today, but I didnt find any, so I'll check another place later on. It's been cold and rainy here for the past few days, so Im in no rush to finish and paint it.

I hope that PVC blade isn't too heavy for such a small saber. Believe me, I have a few pipes I fight with that feel more like flammenschwerts and odachis rather than lightsabers. For my lightsabers I use bamboo sticks which are pretty good as I've dueled with them since ROTS came out and so far only 2 have snapped in half (due to an insanely fast, very hard fight I had with my buddy. Whacked his stick so hard that BOTH of our sticks snapped.) while another had the tip break off from me swinging it around and accidentally hitting the corner of my house's brick wall (really made me mad since it was my favorite since it handled really well and had the same size and curvature of the Highlander Masamune katana, one of my favorite swords, and I used it as if it was that sword). But... it's your saber and feel free to do what you like. Can't wait to see it finished. One of the best scratch builds I've seen yet.

Well, I've been working on this for the past few days without much to show. I still need to make the little black peice by the shroud, and my attempt at making fake LED's from that yellow plastic failed to say the least, so Im going to try and get some clear epoxy to cast a few.
The box on top of the shroud is more or less done. I've filled in the last few dents and cracks so all I need to do is polish it up and drill holes in it for the knob and the metal ring.
I cut some styrene to glue together and make the grips. I've built up 1 so far.

I also managed to pick up a brass thumbscrew that was as close to the real one as I could find. I made a copy of the sliver knob on my AOTC FX and am in the process of cleaning it up. You can see it infont of the saber.
And here is a close up of the grip.

So what do you guys think? Too big? Too small? Too fat? Not fat enough?
I'd hate to build up six and then get shot down :lol

Movie stunt sabers have all the pokey parts removed for just that reason.

From what I can see it looks great. The only small suggestions are, the emitter shroud is angled slightly more acute than the comparison saber. Also, the control box looks just a hair too tall. Great job though, it looks really cool.

:thumbsup

I said that in a moment of un-clarity :D
Im aware that they remove as much as possible to make the real stunt sabers. I've seen the Episode 3 stunts on the board here before. Im sure they worked this one much the same way as they did those.
The design is still really awkward though. The whole upper section is just, covered in parts and that is compounded by the small size to make for one bad hand hold. I may end up making a stunt of my stunt :lol
I've considered making a battle damaged version so I might go that road too.

And, MandalorFett, thanks for the compliments and suggestions. The shroud is a bit stubby but, I doubt I can fix it this far into the build (too afraid I'll mess up :lol ) The control box can be sanded down though, that shouldn't be too hard to do, or fix if I mess it up.

Okay, I finished the grips today. All six. I stuck them on with some masking tape and snapped a photo.
6grips.jpg

I also finished the knob that goes on top. I chucked it up in my Dremel and attacked it with files and sand paper. It looks great accept for a tiny chip in one spot. I may or may not patch it up.
That white block in front with the markings on it is the styrene blank for the little black peice behind the shroud. I'll start cutting and shaping it tomorrow. Hopefully it will turn out better than my last attempt at the same peice.
I picked up some epoxy gel today, which I will try to use to cast a few LED copies.
I worked on scratch building a covertec wheel but that didnt go so hot. Neither did my attempt to use a paper clip for the ring on the shroud.
All in all its almost done, just a few little odds and ends to make and attach before I paint it and glue it all together.

Here's the latest inprog shot of my Anakin saber.
sabert.jpg

I finished up the greeble behing the shroud and scrath built a wanna' be covertec wheel. I added a few other little bits and peices and drilled all the hole for the various parts, such as the top knob and the rivet behind the shroud.
All I have left to do is premenantly attach the thingy behind the shroud, make the ring around the brass thumbscrew, and make the LED panel for the control box. After that its just gluing it all together and painting it.
Im toying with the idea of making a cut in half version, and a less cluttered stunt version, but we'll see.
