Amazing Spiderman Build (Taylor McManus)

Awesome post flush! Funny thing is, I also bought a mcmanus and damngoodpaul print haha! I wanted to see both in person... And have them both sewn up. I don't plan to do puffy paint only because I know what happens to it after a few weeks of wearing while doing poses :angry
Both of those suits are gorgeous!

Now the Million Dollar Question.
How many zippers and where?

Paul told me there are three in his print. One behind the neck and the other two on the sides by the armpit area.

But I'm waiting for his writeup on how to sew it and give it to a seamstress, because I cannot sew to save my life. :D

If you're going to put in two zippers, going from the armpits to the lower back, the easiest way to approximate the length of the zippers you'll need is to put on a well-fitting pair of pants with belt loops. Hike your pants up to your real/natural waist, which is right around your belly button. (It also tends to be the narrowest part of your torso)

Then using a tailor's measuring tape, run it through one of the belt loops on the side of the pants, holding one end into your armpit, and pulling the other end taut until you feel it hit the middle seam on the back of your pants or the central belt loop on the back. (If there is one)

Boom! Measured!

With zippers, it's always better to err on the side of caution. Better to have zippers that are too short (So long as they are longer than the pieces they are attached to) than too long, as that will cause bunching.

Good luck.

Nick, if I had a zipper from the back of the mask all the way down my back, would that work just fine? I'm having my mask attached so it looks better

It might work fine, but in my opinion it takes away a great deal from "the look" of the costume. My first Spidey suit (10 years ago) had a zipper down the middle of the back... it's just too easy to "see" and takes away from trying to look like the "real" Spider-Man!

Zentai suits i've worn look fine with the zipper, it's hidden rather well.

I'm just losing my mind here.
My brain can't figure how a zipper from armpit to waist on each side will let someone in and out of it. I can't find pictures anywhere.

all this stuff is great. i love this thread. anyway mercy, what colors are you using, true red, black and what color blue. Anyone else using any different colors?

Mercy, this method is really THE way most Spidey suits have been done in the past 10 years (at least movie accurate ones). It's from the armpit, down your side, and across your belt line on your BACK... it ends at the small of your back (spine)... the one on the other side also does the same thing.... both zippers meet at that spot. If you look at it from behind, both zippers form a giant "U" shape (the bottom of the U is flattened out across your waistline in the back).

This creates on big "flap" on your back which lifts upwards towards the mask. It's easy to step into the legs... a bit harder to get your head and arms into the upper half, but not that bad.

Zippering yourself back up is the tricky part... not impossible, but not easy!

Listen to PeterParker. (That sounds about right when talking about Spidey)

A zipper up your back is a FAR inferior method of getting in and out of your Spidey suit. They may be called "Invisible zippers" but they are not actually invisible. They create a tiny gap. On a one color zentai suit, this usually isn't too obvious, but as soon as you have multiple colors and eye-drawing patterns, that gap becomes more obvious. The trick is to move that slight gap to the place where it will be least seen...and that just happens to be the sides and under the belt.

Don't try to reinvent the wheel here, many Spidey suit makers have already tried and vetted this process...and it's exactly what was used for the movie suits. It makes the entire back piece into a giant cat flap. Put your legs in, put your arms in and duck your head through, then zip up. You'll have people wondering how the hell you got into the suit. I've seen people convinced that someone in a Spider-Man costume must've been sewn into it.

Because, just like you guys are having a hard time imaging how someone would get in that way, no one will ever expect that method.

PeterParker and Nick have pretty much covered it but I thought a little visual might help:

The zipper that runs along the waist is hidden by the waist band like so:

McLean's suit seems to have three zippers instead of two, though (which as everybody else has said, is very convenient). Redtogusa, can u put it on by yourself?
