Am I the only one that thinks Return of the Jedi is a turkey?

Re: I'm I the only one that thinks Return of the Jedi is a turkey?

Half of ROTJ is a turkey.

I can agree with that.:thumbsup I did like some of it pretty well. Loved the speeders through the forest, and watching the falcon weave in and out of the rebel fleet still gets me excited. The space battle in the end was greatl, just unfortunately intermixed with ewoks to kill the buzz.:wacko

Yep once marcia Lucas left - George had no one around anymore to tell him "NO". She rewrote the first two and not the third. But I will say - luke going into Jabba Palace and doing the flip on the sail barge was pretty awesome. His character was the only one who showed real growth in the series and in the end - he wasn't a joke. He's still my favorite Jedi - and really the only true representation of what they were supposed to be before George started believing his own hype and got nuts with the beauty of monk warriors. I can't stand how preachy and annoying and just plain arrogant then Jedi were in the prequels. But, Luke did come off as gay when he entered the room with "I'M WITH YA TOO!" - What are you so happy about?

Re: I'm I the only one that thinks Return of the Jedi is a turkey?

Who the **** likes Empire more than STAR WARS?

Madness!

Re: I'm I the only one that thinks Return of the Jedi is a turkey?

Wrath of Kahn was still the best Star Trek in my opinion. But, I think I enjoyed Voyage Home more than any of them.

Re: I'm I the only one that thinks Return of the Jedi is a turkey?

I enjoyed ROTJ, and didn't really mind the ewoks. That being said It was the weakest of the OT. I guess I just kinda realize that one is more for the kids in some parts.(ewoks)

Re: I'm I the only one that thinks Return of the Jedi is a turkey?

I can't watch Jedi anymore to be honest.
Compared to the other two, it has too many problems for me.
The comment about the gags vs jokes is spot on.
The crying Rancor keeper, that just takes away from the impact of that scene. Salacious Crumb - why? What's the point of that thing?
Jabba's band, easily some of the worst character design in ANY SF/F film.
Boba Fett's demise - as has been mentioned, a complete waste for a cheap joke.
The magnetic grabs that pick up 3po and R2 - notice how they decend with just the correct distance to accommodate the differing sizes of the two droids.
Ewoks - say no more.
Some very rough matte work - the shot of the Falcon when Han looks over to her aboard the hanger.
The whole Death Star thing. WTF? It still has a fatal flaw, similar to the first, and that's exploited the same way. So the empire doesn't have anyone to work this out?
'We've analysed their attack sir, and there is a danger, there's a way into the reactor that's just wide enough for ships to traverse - oh and it's unprotected.' :wacko
The whole Death Star attack falls flat - because by then, we've all seen the outcome a thousand times before in ANH.
The whole sister thing just doesn't work at all, and the coincidences concerning this make me wince when I look back at the other two films.
The shot of the Ewoks 'emerging' to take on the Imperials. If you watch that shot the Ewok's are just off camera - not in hiding.
I don't think this film was taken that seriously when it was made, and I just can't look at it in the same way as the first two - it feels rushed, and doesn't seem to have been made with the same amount of love as the first two - and I don't mean that disrespectfully to anyone concerned in the making of the film, before someone tries to lynch me.

But Ken's optical work in other shots is ****ing unmatched.

Agreed - apart from the 2 TIES passing - or rather seen through the underside of the Falcon, which I picked up at the cinema, and the wave of TIEs that 'appear' when seen through the Falcon's cockpit window.
But saying that, there are some real OMG superb moments, for sure.

Well i'm in the love it camp really, the OT were the first things i saw at the pictures, i was a daft kid who just loved everything about the movies.
As i've grown up, sure i see the faults, matte lines, some cheesy moments, but that love has never left me, seeing luke and vader together at the end was and still is a powerful moment for me.
I for one was sad to see it end, knowing there would be no more.
Now the movies are like an old friend, i can watch them whever the mood takes me, and remember that daft kid who couldn't wait to see how it all panned out

Same for me. I'm really tired of all the GL bashing that goes on. I'm not in love with the Pre-quels, but I don't mind them. As far as the Original Series, I think they were and are still great. I just finished watching all 6 films yesterday on Spike and it was great watching them evolve and devolve.

ya, George was already losing his mind by the time he made jedi lol. It was more of a kids show then the other 2 for sure

They're all kids' shows, but there's a big gulf between childISH and childLIKE. "UP" is childlike. "Shrek 4" is childISH. Jedi just got a little childish. It goes back to the very astute jokes v. gags comment made above. One of the prequels' fatal flaws was that it tried to be both childlike and momentous, and ended up being childish and pompous, making it too dull for most kids and too goofy for many adults. You could see the beginnings of this in Jedi.

I'm not bashing Jedi; I think it's great and I love it to pieces. But you can definitely see the beginning of the end, or hints of it, when you watch that one. Not a turkey by any means, but a sad hint of turkeys yet to come.

QFT. Lucas these days has surrounded himself with sycophants and yes-men... is it surprising that we got Jar-Jar and the other horrid elements of the prequels? The thing I remarked on to my husband after seeing Sith is you can see Spielberg's hand in that film... parts of it are just too subtle for it to be Lucas' work alone.

What he said...

I Love the shuttle tyderium though.

I think the Family Guy Star Wars specials got it right. The empire just didn't want to spend the money to put something over the vent lol.

I grew up with Jedi and it was my favorite until the availibility of video meant I could watch the others and I have to say that it ranks third in quality.
It seems as thought Lucas did a Matrix 3 and took the ideas he had left over from the previous films and just padded a story around them.

Jabba's palace - Awesome
Rancor - Awesome
Sail barge fight - Awesome
Speeder bike chase - Awesome
Lightsaber fight - Awesome

Mostly everything else - Average. Not terrible just average.

Compared to ANH and ESB yeah this film is poor but they are rated as some of the greatest films ever made, any director nowadays would kill for a movie of Jedi's quality.

ps. I always hated the Ewoks even as a kid in the target age range. I especially hated the cartoons and the movies, even more now James Cameron remade them as Avatar.

Oh, one more thing - the title - something I wanted to mention in my post above but forgot about.

Return of the Jedi?
Not really, return of a Jedi (Luke) perhaps.
Maybe the title refers to Luke and Leia, soon to be Jedi?

Okay, I'm being really nitpicky - but Lucas himself said Luke turned to the darkside at the end of Jedi to defeat Vader - so that either makes him a dark Jedi or a Sith apprentice (is there a difference?). But, there's no Sithlord to train him, so he can't be an apprentice. Oh, I don't know - and I don't want to go into the follow-up novel explanations because that's simply all they are.

Yeah it has nothing to do with losing your inner child, its just a bad movie all around. Kids aren't stupid, they can tell when they are being pandered to. ANH & ESB were great because they were first of all well written but they also took themselves seriously as a story. Jedi was just a kick to the balls as George put little thought into wrapping the series up. The story has too many plot holes and things just ended with little satisfaction. Most of the story is a rehash with copied crap from the first 2, the rest is just bad attempts at the wrong type of comedy in a movie that should have had little off it.

Boba's early exit with a burping sarlaac, Yoda's badly acted death scene also an early exit, Bens lame reason for lying, Emperor with a speech impediment, another Death Star, another alien band playing stupid music.

Here are a few other reasons along with what others have brought up.

Exactly what was the plan to save Han? Why wasn't Vader waiting for them. And don't argue the Thrawn books either

Chewbacca didn't quite get the Tarzan yell right.

Robot torture scene, ooh spank me.

Stormtroopers yelling "Freeze"

Weren't you afraid of Jabba the crime boss, you know the fat slug that could only move his arms.

For a Jedi you think Luke would know he was standing on a trap door.

Han Solo being whipped for the whole movie.

Ewoks, enough said. Should have stuck with the Wookie planet idea.

Salacious crumb = muppet reject

George use the thesaurus, look up "Destiny"
