Aluminum cast Clone Trooper Helmet

Re: Aluminium cast Clone Trooper Helmet

what at a lame comment, this is a totally custom creation and a work of art. It's absurd how some people can't tell the difference between a recast some slimeball does to make a quick buck and a true artisan who creates a whole new and custom one-off helmet for their own collection. It seems like some people just can't wait to cry recast...

You obviously don't understand what a recast is. Taking an existing prop, changing it slightly and then moulding it, is recasting.

i understand precisely what a recast is, and I also believe that if you are making a new creation (alluminum, with a totally custom interior) for YOUR OWN COLLECTION with no intention to resell it then that is perfectly fine. But hey that's just me, I guess you guys can stick with your recast witch hunting and the mods will decide. That's the last I'll say about this any try and let alienbuilder get his thread back on track with his excellent build.

Sorry, all movie-like clone helmets are MR-recasts. Only MR can complain here.
OK, what is your problem? Do you have an Alu helmet? Do you have an clone helmet with neck ring and it is not from EVO3?
Come down from your tree and learn.

If somebody make an alu copy of my RC helmet (e.g.), I would be honored. Think about it. ;)

Re: Aluminium cast Clone Trooper Helmet

so i first don't wanted to discuss the recast things here but it seems to be necessary. well, of course, as i said before, it is a recast technically. but it really depends on your definition of recast. per definition even licensed casts are recasts in a way. if you mean recast a cast without license, of course ligonap is right, only mr had one. and normally they are the only one who can sell them. but of course fans are allowed to do anything they want, as a private person, as long as they don't sell it. the other point is, that it is more "honorable" to do something absolutely by himself. from the first step on. i can understand that, absolutely. but for me its also a meter of time. sure, i could sculpt such helmet, and than make a mold. but why, if i can get a nearly finish one to fulfill my idea. people use always still existing things, don't they?
and the point with true artisty… :) well, i studied fine arts for 6 years, and when i think about it, i still can't say what this could be. so, this little project is just hobby for me. and one more time: i don't want to make anyone angry. i can understand that some people think its recast, and some may not. i just wanted to share what I'm doing here. if the thread would be closed, i won't have a problem with it, if not, also fine.

a little example, that i don't speak some phrases here… i m also a little alien fan, and as the helmets too, i wanted to have a good and solid figure. but anything available wash t what i wanted to. so i sculpted my own, and thats my own work at all. but just hobby for me, as i said...

so, i really like to sculpt things. but when there is an easy way, for my hobby, its true, i will choose this one. for me thats logical.

best regards to everyone, hinrich:)

oh, i forgot… frozenintime29: its wax. it ll be melt out of the casting mold after they are baked for 3 days at around 600 degrees celsius.

Re: Aluminium cast Clone Trooper Helmet

...I feel really nervous about stirring up the whole re-casting thing again, but I feel like I want to say my point of view, slightly in defense of alienbuilder.

To start with, I believe that yes, this is re-casting, 'technically' or otherwise, and is wrong,...but this is real life, and things are a bit less black and white.

If you are on this site then fundamentally we are all guilty of promoting a hobby that almost blatantly disregards artistic copyright, every time we recreate someone else's design work. Some of us (myself included) even go on to sell these recreations for a profit. It is wrong.

It is also my hobby...which doesn't justify my actions, but I do it on the belief that it is not having a detrimental effect on another business or individual that has more 'rights' than myself.

Just because it is not being offered for sale, and for personal use, does NOT make it any less wrong...just less visible (unless you then decide to start a thread on a forum!), but that doesn't mean that you can stop it from happening. Just be aware that you ARE doing something wrong.

Had alienbuilder sculpted the helmet themselves then great, it's not a recast...but its still not their design to copy...but it's a hobby, and maybe they came to the conclusion that buying this recast helmet, and then recasting it again, wouldn't have an effect on another business, and so therefore justified the time saving involved in not re-inventing the wheel (sculpting from scratch). I think alienbuilder is probably right.

No-one can really control what people do in the privacy of their own homes, and do for their own enjoyment, whether they are right or wrong, or whether you should openly talk about them is always going to be debated, but I have come to the conclusion that as long as, to the best of your knowledge, no-one is going to get 'hurt', then what is the problem?

I, for one, can't wait to see what this helmet looks like at the end!

Re: Aluminium cast Clone Trooper Helmet

I somehow missed a lifetime of art classes, so it's really neat to see the methodolgies behind casting that helmet in aluminum. Endlessly fascinating. Thanks Alienbuilder

Re: Aluminium cast Clone Trooper Helmet

hallo,
sorry for the lack of updates. just too much work this week. just endless retouching these helmets. but i made photos and after filling the oven on saturday i ll have some free days so i can upload them.
greetings, hinrich

If it was a problem with the staff they would've closed this thread by now. So everyone should stop talking about him like he is selling copy's of someone else's work. As long as he doesn't he is doing nothing wrong

Cool project! Very different.

Re: Aluminium cast Clone Trooper Helmet

hallo again,

the oven is running now an i have some "free" days until the cast on wednesday or tuesday next week. so, what have i done last week? first i made the 2 more wax helmets at the weekend. than i had to retouch them all, what was taking a lot of time, because i had to fill up every little hole in the wax (the little air bubbles which came in through the wax brushing). i also cut of the wax were the 2 pieces were put together and resculpted this area. and i finished the interior neckring...

next i cut in 2 little holes in the "ears". for the normal 501 helmet these will be filled with black polyester later and so after sanding there will be just black dots. i think this will be better than paint it on. the 2 other helmets will get some small microphones there, so i can hear whats going on outside.
IMG_9717 Kopie.JPG

i also had to cut off and rebuild the mictips on these 2 helmets, so that the speakers can be build in later.

all 3 finished helmets...

IMG_9760 Kopie.JPG

well, from now on, its just a technical description of how lost wax casting works. i have to say, that every foundry do this a little bit different, but the principal is generally the same since the antique… at first i hat to make the core. i used a mix of plaster, recycled material from old molds and grog for the whole form building. because i had several holes in the helmet, i had to close these with clay.
IMG_9761 Kopie.JPG

than i filled in the liquid plaster-grog mix and while its hardening, i put on a plate so i ve a good, solid base later.

IMG_9763 Kopie.JPG

IMG_9765 Kopie.JPG

i also had to put an iron into it… after it hardened out, i can take of the clay. you can see the core very good now.
IMG_9768 Kopie.JPG

IMG_9770 Kopie.JPG

after that, i build the casting system out of wax tubes where the aluminum can be filled in later on. you can see the funnel on the top. for the lower part i let the metal fall in. for the upper parts, you can see the system hits the surface also uprising. this way the metal can fill up the mold nice and without turbulences from bottom to the top. at the top there are 2 tubes not connecting to the system but leading to the funnels side. one of these is for the air to come out. the other is, in this case just for safety, because i have enough holes in my model. but normally its for the core air. you can see the little copper tube. this will connect the core with the outside. when hot metal will be filled into a form, the air in the core will extract immediately, so you have to take it away. otherwise you will have big bubbles in your metal sculpt later on.
the nails you see connect the core to the rest of the mold and fix it. the holes will be weld later on.
IMG_9777 Kopie.JPG

IMG_9779 Kopie.JPG

than i started to make the casting mold. first i sprayed the whole thing with a the same mix like i used for the core, but with finer material and without the recycled stuff in it to get a better surface.
IMG_9788 Kopie.JPG

IMG_9789 Kopie.JPG

IMG_9791 Kopie.JPG

than i threw on some the normal mix, just with a little bit better grog in it. so i got a nice little cocoon.

IMG_9792 Kopie.JPG

IMG_9793 Kopie.JPG

this one is set than into a cylindric form and than filled it up with the moldmix.

IMG_9794 Kopie.JPG

IMG_9783 Kopie.JPG

so you get a nice cylindric form. after burning, the mold is very soft so you have to pack it in some fresh plaster fabric so they won't crack when heavy metal is cast in. the cylindric form helps to hold the pressure in it.

IMG_9787 Kopie.JPG

at least we put all the forms into a big ceramic oven where the wax will be burned out for the next few days at around 600 degrees celsius.

IMG_9799 Kopie.JPG

well, thats it. next will be the casting itself an the finishing of the aluminum, which means: sanding sanding sanding. it will take also a lot of time/ work. but for now i hope the cast will be fine.

i also have to regret my not so good english right now. sorry if i just wrote some confusing things here. if you have any questions feel free to ask.

you will see more photos next week than.

best greets, hinrich
