So, again, I am unfamiliar with the source material really, but with the ending as it was, is there written source material that continues beyond that point?

I’m also hoping for more of this, but I don’t want to wait either!!!

Yes the film covered the first 4 volumes of the manga from what I have heard. There are 9 volumes in total so definitely enough for a sequel or two in there.

The original manga tells different self-contained stories in each volume, but with an ongoing story arc. The movie took stuff from the first four or five volumes and mixed them up to make one narrative. For instance, Hugo doesn't come into the story until volume three, and Alita enters Motorball as a result of what happens to him (not sure if this is a spoiler thread) in volume four. The character of Ito's wife isn't in the original, she was added for the OVA, which I didn't rate very highly at all.

All of the stuff about Alita's origins doesn't really start until she begins to have major flashbacks while working her way up through the motorball leagues. In the book, the spacecraft that contains the berserker body was found by Ito many years before his discovery of Alita, and ends up having very serious repercussions that lead to Alita leaving the city and heading off into the wastelands on a quest to find Nova (the big bad guy you see at the end of the movie.

The movie covers only a tiny amount of the story, which has been continued in fits and spurts over the years. If you liked the movie, I wholeheartedly recommend reading the graphic novels, it's an epic tale. You can actually find it free to read online quite easily.

I hadn't seen the OAV before (I think I'd read one random volume of the manga years ago), but I did watch it last night... and I prefer this movie! I don't know if it was because of the English dub or not, but I really didn't like Gally/Alita's "bubbliness," and it felt like there was something missing to the anime.

The OVA sucked, read the books!

They’re not bad ONLY if you never read the manga.

But anyone who hasn’t done so should read the manga if only to enhance your appreciation of this movie.

It’s a hyperbolically violent film that had me horrified at times but was also able to move me emotionally to tears.

Left disappointed with this one. Reminded too much of Avatar - the CG just looked too unnatural and this seemed more like an animated film. The plot was razor thin at times and didn't really seem to go anywhere and in the end, it was all just a setup for a sequel/series. The characters weren't any better... I have a feeling there was a good movie in here someplace, but... this just didn't work for me.

The ending, to me, was the equivalent of Luke Skywalker in Star Wars - not blowing up the Death Star.

TOTALLY

JD Strange how we could have such different experiences.

Not that people don't often disagree, but the characters weren't any better? How did you not totally fall in love with Alita's innocence, determination, love, compassion, grit, warrior's spirit, etc? Christof waltz as Ito? C'mon... great performance. I'll give you Hugo was weak, but still served his purpose.

What an amazing film.. and it's strange that we see it so differently.

The ending was... a cliffhanger. i seriously begs a sequel, and as good as this was I'd be all for it.

The "death star wasn't blown up" because she's working her way toward that goal. And the look on her face said "I WILL"

What is the OAV?

Original Animation Video, also known as OVA or Original Video Animation. This was a format that was popular in Japan during the '80s/'90s and was one of three outlets for anime, back then you had TV shows, movies, and then you had OVAs/OAVs which were direct to video releases. It's worth noting that in Japan direct to video did not mean crap movies that weren't good enough for the theaters. The direct to video market in Japan was mainly used for limited run series, something that would entail more than one "episode" like a movie but often less than a full season for TV.

Eh, I don’t know if all these film financing commissions I’ve been to, criticizing the indie scripts my company is trying to produce, are making me jaded or picky, but I did not enjoy that one.
My biggest problem is the dialogue honestly, it was unbearably cliché and cheesy at times.
Then the bits that awoke my curiosity, they didn’t expend on it much if at all. It was all very superficial, didn’t make me think nor feel much.
And it was a bit too much CGI to be entertained with the fight scenes even.
That said I may check out the manga to see if it’s deeper and more satisfying than this.

I didn't feel Alita had most of what you expressed - it felt contrived and rushed to me. I mean - these huge leaps we got with the characters felt out of place. Instead of a natural evolution, it was forced and out of place. Am I gonna lie and pretend that there weren't a few moments of magic? There were one or two, but not enough to save it for me.

As far as the story - the lack of an ending just felt like a forced setup for a sequel/series. I like my movies to follow basic storytelling - and that usually includes an ending... Alita didn't have that, at all. This wasn't a movie - it was an attempt to start a franchise.

But, hey - obviously people liked it and maybe it will turnaround for me when/if we get sequels. Glad people liked it, it just didn't work for me.

Huge leaps?

This sounds suspiciously like the Rey argument all over again.

Things are ALOT different, here. Alita isn't learning new powers...she is discovering that she has them. they are a part of her;built into her instincts...it's all prior training. She just didn't remember that she knew all of it because of the trauma of her being deactivated and flung in the dust bin. But her reflexes come out immediately, and as time goes on she remembers more and more. But the point is she isn't learning this stuff.. she is remembering it.

If you think this movie didn't have a satisfying ending, try watching the anime and tell me it had one. Or for that matter, try telling me that the film version of Alita had less emotion and depth than the anime's "Gally", who is nothing but bubbly and annoying throughout.

I mean, different strokes and all. But not caring for something is far different than telling a story that it has no depth and is contrived when it's not. At least most of those here who have seen it so far haven't had that experience.

This isn't meant as a personal dig, so please don't think that. It still remains astonishment at the fact that someone else finds a character so flat and unconvincing when i was so thoroughly inspired by her.

I dunno

The not having an ending....I get that may be disconcerting to some, but it's a result of the film only covering four books of a nine volume manga. To have a definitive ending, they would have had to change the entire plot-line, which would then have lead to other complaints about western adaptions not respecting the source material. The ending worked for me, but then I was already invested in the story and hoping for a sequel.

Manga's always have clunky dialogue

yep, really enjoyed the film.visually stunning, fast paced,a little cliched at times but doesn't get bogged down at those moments and quite emotional.
highly recommend seeing it in the big screen where it's meant to be seen!!!

It was much better than I expected, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I just want to know the kind of sunglasses Vector was wearing!

Edit:
They are sunglasses designed by a Dutch designer called Roger Hoppenbrouwers.
