Aliens: Colonial Marines

I'm have a blast wandering Hadley's Hope. They really nailed the look and atmosphere (I am playing on my 24" iMac). I found Hudson yesterday and his pulse rifle. Only part that was odd on this level so far are these zombie like xeno's in the sewer system.

After finally being able to install and play the game this weekend I have to say that I'm enjoying it quite a bit. I really don't understand the complaints about the graphics, but then again the most modern shooter that I've played recently was FEAR 3 so I can't really say what the graphics level of shooters are like these days, plus I don't have a very powerful system either so I wouldn't be able to see the graphics at full settings even if it they were better.

The gameplay, so far, is pretty good although the NPC AI is a bit on the weak side, I like how they tend to not follow you if you've wandered off the path a bit to explore and then get back on track. The aliens themselves are pretty tough and I don't think that I've ever died so often in a shooter before and I'm only playing on Soldier difficulty, I'm really beginning to hate those bugs and actually relish the parts where I fight the mercs.

My only real beef about the game is the checkpoint save system, is that trend in shooters these days? I hope not because I hate the checkpoint save system, I'm used to and like being able to save anytime, anywhere that way if I mess up and/or die I don't have to repeat whole sections. I also dislike it because it means that I have to commit to a certain minimum play time where as with the save anytime system I can play for as long or as little as I like because it allows me to grab a quick game in even if I don't have much time to play or I can just save and quit if I have to go somewhere or do something all of a sudden.

Here's my question. Is there any way that this game could have been released in 2013 at that price point if there was no license attached to it?

It probably would have been a 10.00 download in the ps3 store or xbox live and on steam but otherwise it'd be another generic shooter from a company known more for their misses than hits.

Haven't read the thread; but saw the title and thought of CHRIS CHULAMANIS.

Now THERE was a guy who was all about the Colonial Marines.

RIP, bro.

Except that the Hadley's Hope complex seen in Aliens: Colonial Marines survived very much intact, complete with power. If so much can survive undisturbed, who is to say Hudson couldn't have come out of it alright?

If its not the 50-megaton explosion that would kill him, then the nuclear fallout would have.

How long after the blast do these new Marines show up? Does it ever say?

Wiki says after 3-5 weeks the area is safe for travel or decontamination. But stuff would still be eradiated right?

In the game, they state that they arrive 17 weeks after the events in Aliens. (I suppose that was supposed to be a reference to the "17 days" line.)

Disappointed with the game after delay after delay. Graphics do look like PS2, but still atmospheric and enjoyable if short. Hopefully the inevitable sequel/ prequel will be a lot better. But then we'll have to download it on the PS4 :)

After looking at the behind the scenes videos and the promises that this game was being made by fans for fans, I've got two words.

Black Mesa

Now THAT is a game made by fans for fans that ended being pretty awesome.

I sort of hope another designer swoops in and puts and awesome game out after 6 months just to stick it to Gearbox.

Agreed. I've been playing it the last few days and it is superb.

You know what would have been cool? A survival game in which you play Hudson, who survives the xeno-horde that pulls him down and must escape Hadley's Hope--alone--before the meltdown.

Did they ever finish it, and include Xen? I played through what was released months ago, you get to the point where you would originally be transported to Xen, and it just ends. The dev team announced that they did plan on finishing the game and including Xen, I'm not sure if that's actually happened yet though.

AWESOME mod though, definitely worth playing through. I'm glad it was finally released, after being... what... over 3 years late? :lol

They haven't finished Xen yet. But even knowing that, it still feels more finished and balanced than A:CM. The continuity nods to the original's expansions (Barney not wearing his uniform) and Half Life's sequels (Eli Vance and Isaac Kleiner being present during the Resonance Cascade) are spot on. The voice acting is even better, and that's going up against Michael Biehn and Lance Henrickson which makes me cry.

Plus delaying Xen for a while might give the team a chance to bring in Michael Shapiro to voice Gman since they couldn't get him at first.

Gotten a little further into the game. Actually enjoyed it more fighting the humans than the Xenos, then back to the aliens and taken right out of the experience again.

Yeah, how long does a nuclear fallout normally last?

Depends on the isotopes and elements. Anywhere from minutes to days to years depending on the reaction type and the fuels. Activated N-16 is about 16-18 min, some of the Xe and Kr can be in the hours range, Co-60 is 5.2 years roughly. "Fallout" is term typically reserved for after effects from a detonated nuclear weapon, which works much differently from a typical nuclear power facility.

Of course, Burke mentions that the atmo processor is a fusion reactor, which pretty much throws everything about nuclear fallout out the window. Bishop states it's about a 40 megaton blast, but that's just another comparison to 40 million tons of dynamite. Accepting all that, Bishop also says it's a blast radius of 30km, which would pretty well wreck the hell out of everything in Hadley's Hope.

Then again I forgot all of this while playing and totally suspended disbelief so I enjoyed running around Operations and the med lab. :)

If you enjoyed the movies, you will love the game. It's been about a week since launch, which is usually how long it takes for you to start disliking the game, but I still love it. Escape and Survival are insanely fun. Add me on PSN if you'd ever want to play with me!
