Alien: Isolation - EVAC Sign

Hi all,

Just a quick make from me today...

After I'd fallen in love with the game, I stumbled across some images of the pre-order Special Edition packaging. Unfortunately, I was very late to the Alien: Isolation party. (Waaaaaay past the point of pre-order).

I decided I'd make myself a small sign version, to display with my other Alien: Isolation props.

Now the first image I came across was this version for the xbox:

I decided I'd make a clean version by tracing over the image in Photoshop. However, there were a few quirks in the design that really set my teeth on edge. The lines that cut through the red border are neither 45°, nor are they lined up corner to corner. This hurts my soul.

After a bit of trial and error with spacing, fonts and the life boat silhouette. I felt I was ready to print. I did so onto decal paper, let it dry, then sprayed it with 3 light layers of matte varnish (It's Games Workshop's Purity Seal, somewhere between matte and satin). After trimming and soaking, I applied the decal, in one piece, to some 1.5mm styrene.

It still needs the edges tidying up, but it's about there:

After all this, I came across another image, this time labelled as the playstation version:

These are definitely not the same design, as the spacing is different, but it has highlighted a few issues with my version. The font is much more rounded on the corners, and the detail on the life boat are slightly out. For this project, I can live with the inaccuracies!

One added, unexpected bonus!

Light comes through the back of the styrene in a very pleasing manner. This is probably not the end of the project...

I love this! I really liked all the Isolation props, I thought the designers did an amazing job with them. They all felt like they had the exact right mix of the greeblie-heavy Alien stuff with a hint of the slicker Aliens-era bits.

If you're interested in pursuing the glowing effect, have you thought about having the graphic printed directly onto opal acrylic? I did it all the time on DW for control consoles etc and it looks great. At that size it should be fairly cheap too.

Re: the wonky design on the original, just tell yourself that's a homage to the slightly rough and ready coloured in letraset they used on the original set :)
