Alien/H. R. Giger Desk Fan- Product/Prop Design Project

Hello Everyone,
First post here and I thought I would share a ten week long project I did for my Industrial Design class. Some of you may already know this but much like Adam Savage, H. R. Giger’s background is in Industrial Design. So I chose to redesign a desk fan with Giger’s biomechanics design language. It started with initial sketching and went into a Zbrush 3D Model that was 3D printed. The model was then sanded, painted and finished with a gloss clear coat. I also did some packaging design based off of a previous build done by Adam Savage for his Bladerunner prop pistol. It’s basically a plywood box covered with Tolex with a black felt interior. Weathering was done with a Scotchbrite pad and coffee. Hope you enjoy and thank you.

Great photos - Well done I can see how much work went into this.

Did you have many ups and downs or a smooth build ?

Thank you! It was definitely a bumpy learning process all the way through. I had to teach myself some new techniques with finishing 3D prints along with working with new materials like Tolex. I did have a few failures with the fan design and building enough pressure within the inner cavity to force a significant amount of air out.

That is certainly in his style, well done!

The carry case is reminiscent of a 60 year old case- nicely done.
