Alice in Wonderland Armor and other builds

I've now seen Alice in Wonderland 3 times. I'm addicted to the costumes in that movie! Ultimately I'll be making at least 4 of them. But the one that I thought was unattainable has turned out to be anything but!

Approximately 2 weeks ago I contacted the same company that made the armor for Underworld Evolution and Sonia's armor in Underworld Rise of the Lycans. I asked if they were responsible for creating Alice's armor from the movie.

Mitch of Valentine Armories told me that he wasn't but that he could replicate it. I was THRILLED. I knew it wouldn't be exact but that it would be a pretty close rendition. I suddenly had a new costume for DCon. Then he told me he'd have it ready in 5 days. Now panic sets it. I have a Con coming up this weekend which is the last one I'll go to before DCon so I'm scrambling like mad to get the rest of the costume put together.

First for the pretty stuff:

Mitch also made the forearms and handplates and then attached them to gauntlet gloves. I just don't have a picture of them yet. I pick up everything on Friday.

The undersuit fabric was a little tricky to find and still requires some work. I found this:

It's close in design but the backing fabric on the real deal is silver as well....so I've got some playing to do to try to replicate that.

Next up is the underskirt. It's just simply leather cut in to approx. 1 inch strips with the bottom couple of inches split in the middle. However, it is woven through a mesh made by chain - which isn't complicated at all to create BUT time consumming. I've purchased 42 feet of chain and jumprings to made the connections, however it is likely the one thing that won't get done before this con. I may go with spray painting cording to give it the same feel for this con AND to help measure how long each piece of chain needs to be so I don't waste any. The skirt itself will be silver leather which thankfully Tandy had.

The overskirt is scale maille. Mitch could have done it but needed more time AND a lot more money. I may eventually get him to do this, but for now I've gone with leather. I've cut out a leather "base", marked off all the lines for where the scales need to go and have cut out around 200 of them. Tandy had 3 packages (total of 75 pieces) of project fish which saved a bunch of time. I simply cut off their little tails. Then I spray painted them. Tonight the hole punching and gluing begin. I'll go back in and sew them on so they are good and sturdy (thus the holes) but for now the glue will be fine.

Apparently Deuce figured they were real fish and good enough to eat. I'm sure I'll be finding de-tailed fish bodies all over the basement for awhile.

The leather overskirt base will be sewn at the top edge to the underskirt and then a casing made for a belt to slide through. This will all be hidden under the armor. The front part of the underskirt sits a little more forward and over laps the back of the underskirt slightly. I think I've resolved how to make that work.

The guy at Tandy was SO helpful. Alice has odd looking leather strips hanging down from the rondelles. He immediately knew what technique it was and showed me how to do it. They also had 4 foot strips of leather that are the correct width and have evenly spaced holes in them for the strips Alice has on her shoulders. Unfortunately they aren't scalloped as they should be but he also showed me the perfect, allbeit time consumming, way to resolve that. It will also be done after this Con.

The gloves I used were simple black motorcycle gauntlet gloves. Mitch painted them for me. For the boots, I went with the standard go -go boot in silver.

Wish me luck in getting this dang thing finished in a couple of days!!

Good luck! I am embarking on this path however I will be making the armor!

Mind if I ask how much the armor set you back? $$$$

Also make sure you use the little girls room prior to gearing up and stay away from liquid refreshments!!! Just a tip! ;0)

Looking forward to seeing you geared up, Alice!

And please ask Cheus to leave the leather alone? He need more catnip!

Hahahaha....true enough. I have lots of 501st Legion armor already so I'm well versed in the when to go/when not to drink game. :lol

Re: FANGS costume builds - 2010

You should change the title of this thread to Alice In Wonderland Battle Armor because it is too good to pass up!

The current title is a bit deceiving. Makes me think of vampire costumes! J/K!

Re: FANGS costume builds - 2010

That's some nice looking hardware. I'm sure the time spent on the undersuit and maille skirt will be worth it in the final result. Good luck with the timelines!

Re: FANGS costume builds - 2010

hahaha....well...I figured I'd put other gear I'm working on in here too...but I can keep changing it.....

Thanks guys.....I've used the Ring Lord before. The only issue is that her scales actually have a pattern on them like little mini shields. So if I'm going to upgrade it's going to be ones that look like that. Switching to the scales The Ring Lord has would be cool....but not a whole lot different than the leather fishies. It's potentially something that will need to be cast to get it right. We'll see......another never ending project.....wheeeeeee!!

I'm waiting for some better pictures....but in the meantime....here's some updates! TOTALLY fun costume to wear. And despite the fact that I've still got a lot of work to do, I was really pleased with it. Mitch of Valentine Armories....can't recommend him enough.

The underskirt is a series of strips of silver leather so I just measured them out and then used the rotary cutter:

This skirt needs to be totally redone but at least I know what does and doesn't work. When I was putting it on I caught the end of one of the strips under my shin/knee armor and it pulled it right off. Wasn't expecting that. Luckily it was in the middle so I just tucked it in and it looked like it was intentionally made shorter. And I still need to add on the chain mesh that the strips get woven in to. Obviously I need to make the strips on version 2 shorter. Every time I moved I caught some in my armor.

Here's the fishy skirt almost done....

I only glued them on for this weekend as I didn't have time to punch all of the holes and sew them on. But they aren't on all that securely so I'll be pulling them off and sewing them to the base at some point. Thankfully only one fishy fell off.

The undersuit worked out well. I left it a little baggy and it might have been a little TOO baggy - at least in the arms, so there's a little altering to do there. I ended up spray painting it once sewn to take off the shine and to change the backing from black to silver. Made a HUGE difference and I was thrilled.

The armor needs some padding in the legs and foot area to make it a little more comfy but all in all it was a very comfortable costume to wear. I wore it the whole time with Anomalous who was in his Underworld armor. Lots of people were convinced we were from Lord of the Rings. But those that knew who I was dressed up as were blown away I'm thrilled to say. I was totally excited.

Here's a couple of pics of me getting fitted by Mitch. He spent a lot of time with us showing us his shop and telling us stories about some of the pieces. But for the most part he was making sure the armor fit me perfectly. Thanks again, Mitch! VERY much appreciated!!

Very nice! I am also making several Alice costumes the armor being one of them. As asked above how much did this guy charge to replicate? And, where did you get the fabric?

The fabric I used came from www.fabric.com although there are several others out there that I could have used given that I ended up painting it. As for how much Mitch will charge to replicate this armor, that's something you'd have to ask him directly. I don't feel comfortable passing along that kind of information. What I will say though is that he is a true artist with steel and whatever he charges is worth it. I'm so very thankful that he's only 3 hours away from me so I had the benefit of getting to meet him in person and have him fit it right to me.

The pictures don't do the costume justice - you were stunning.

Awww...thank you Steve. Much appreciated!
