Adventures In Silicone: In the Beginning

Wanting to ramp up my costumes & allergic to latex I jumped into the somewhat intimidating world of silicone prosthetics Halloween 08 1st Build for daughter's zombie costume using Smooth-On Skin Tite adhesive & appliance builder
Mixing part A & B together, painted thin layer of silicone on wax paper in "wound" shapes
wounds%20on%20paper.jpg

Mistake#1: it cures fast(7-8 minutes) mixed up too much, brush stuck in solid silicone, wasted product & brush
Mix small amounts at a time-measure by tablespoon-paint a few thin layers, let cure-will still be tacky. Mix even smaller amounts & tint using cosmetic grade powder pigment(cheap but more mixing) or silicone tints(such as Silc Pig$$) or silicone paint(Psycho Paint$$ and other brands) which are more translucent and natural looking.
Mistake#2: mix whatever pigment you use into Part B. 1st (I read the directions finally) don't mix in a rotating direction but back and forth like Zorro (cuts down on bubbles)
As you add the colored layers-not uniformly in this case-test the material with a toothpick as it cures till it starts to firm up, use a brush, popsicle stick, tweezers or whatever to make texture, pull out "flesh" bits, depressions etc. for realistic wounds. Let cure completely, peel from wax paper and ready to use. Hold to body part where you want to apply and powder around it, then apply thin layer adhesive-in this case more Skin-Tite- inside your powdered outline. Wait a few minutes till tacky or it will slide all over -yeah Mistake # 3.
Overall for first time it turned out pretty good. Lots of dumb luck...which didn't have with the next build but that's another day's thread

Tip of the Day-use cheap plastic cups for mixing, when silicone cures you can pull it out in one piece, ready for next batch to mix
