Adapting Sports Body Armor to THOR Costume?

Hi there! This is my first post here, so be gentle! ;)

I have been out of the costuming game for over a decade (since I made my husband and his buddies costumes for the premier of "Attack of the Clones"... wow...) and I'm dipping my toes back in. Well, not really. More like I'm doing a massive cannon ball back in, and doing 5 costumes all at once. My family has decided to be the Avengers for Halloween and for Comic Con here in Ohio.

Anyways, on to my question. I've tried to search and see if there were already threads about this and didn't find one specifically. I have seen all sorts of ideas on making the Thor costume (My husband wants the "Thor: The Dark World" variation) but I haven't found any discussing the success or total bomb failure of using football or motocross body armor as a base for the costume. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

I'm considering using a padded compression shirt or vest sort of like this as the base of either the vest or the sleeves/armor:

I thought it would possibly give a solid base or even some added bulk to get that "mighty" look. ;) Has anyone successfully used something like this? I also thought the long-sleeved shirts with paddind might work in that regard, too.... And you can get them for insanely cheap on ebay. Anyways, all thoughts are welcome! Thanks in advance!

It could work, ive never tried anything like that myself, everything ive built for muscles has been custom made out of camping mat foam. Looking at it the shirt doesnt seem to add much bulk to the chest muscles but the raised triangular portion on the front of Thors armor does help with that. All in all bulk in the torso can be pretty simple and easy, adding muscle definition on the arms really sells it.
