ACTORS WHO SHOULD STAY AS SUPPORTING PLAYERS...rant...

I think part of Nicolas Cage's problem is his personal life with the addition of a crappy agent( I believe I half read an article that he was suing his agent some time back) that was probably nickling and diming him to death in combination with Cage living outside his means regardless of his (more than likely) multi-million dollar paychecks. The last two films of his I attempted to brave were pretty horrible, definately on the "SUCK FEST" list. Drive Angry, and Season of the Witch.

Yeah...Christensen Hayden sucks big time. He's about one bed post notch better than Shai LaDouche. He was unimpressive in the Star Wars pre-quels,but then again,a bad script will make anyone look bad.

Will Ferrell is also a hit&miss for me.Often times he is unwatchable, but then he does an entertaining film like Old School,Elf and believe it or not...Stranger than Fiction was a pretty good film.He was nominated for an Oscar in that film as I recall, and then he turns around and does Blades of Glory.Yikes.

DiCaprio is a different animal all together I.M.O. I didn't like some of his films( I HATED Titanic..I know that sounds so un American), but I think I admire him as an actor because it would have been so easy for him to go for the easy parts taylored for him that he probably would never even have to ask for and be the pretty boy/GQ pin-up on teen magazines. You have to hand it to him for films like What's Eating Gilber Grape and Catch Me if you Can and he just branched out and was doing films you would never expect to see him in.Obviously he has some sort of working relationship with Scorsese, kind of like what Depp had with Burton.

Yeah...Jack Black annoys the P*^#!@$?*^@# out of me. I don't typically find him funny or entertaining very often.

I think Keanu is partly a victim of starting at a young age in films and being type cast, but he does surprise in films like "The Gift".

Greg Kinnear is a great actor,so I don't know why he is being placed on the should'nt be a lead list?Flash of Genius was a great film of the little guy fighting an evil corporation. He doesn't always get choice films, but who would of thought a guy who started out on "Talk Soup" would be able to act in the first place?Still, he does bad films like any actor...he's been in some good films and bad, like "Stuck on You"... :confused

Exactly! He was great in 'Leaving Las Vegas' (Won Best Actor) and 'Adaptation' (Nominated for Best Actor)! Plus, another 32 seperate awards for acting...
...which is why he keeps getting work, but he does have a list of movies that are SuckFests!:sick

And let us not forget this memorable scene from Knowing. Seriously, he and that tree perform well in this scene. :lol

Yeah, there are definitely plenty of good actors who do "paycheck" films. Or just a film for fun.

It's gotta be a tough business, where success cuts both ways. It opens doors for you and gives you clout and money, but it also can leave you typecast. I think this is why a lot of seriously talented actors still try to do stage work. William Petersen and Patrick Stewart are good examples. These guys are TERRIFIC actors, but Petersen got stuck on CSI (where he was enjoyable, but which was hardly a stretch for him), but watch him in To Live and Die in L.A. and it'll just blow you away. Patrick Stewart, as everyone knows, is a renowned Shakespearean actor, but got stuck as Jean Luc Picard and Professor X. It's the same with Ian McKellan who, last I heard, was Gandalf and Magneto, so get used to it. :) Each of these guys could've allowed themselves to get sucked into yet another genre roll or to just keep doing the same "paycheck" stuff over and over, but they really try to do more than just that. But think about it. How easy would it be for a guy like Ian McKellan to just keep playing characters in fantasy/comic-book/action genre films? He could be some over-the-top Bond villain, then play some character in a DC Comics film, and then do some Harry Potter knock-off or something. Or, you know, he could go direct Richard III at the Old Vic...

The flipside of all of this are guys like Nic Cage. Talented actors who just take too many crappy gigs.

And then there are guys like, say, Sean Bean, who does TERRIFIC work as Boromir (who ROCKS into Mordor), and then again as Ned Stark in Game of Thrones, who did solid work in the Sharpe series back in the 90s, but who still gets stuck doing straight-to-DVD stuff like Black Death or whatever. Not saying the film's bad (I haven't seen it yet -- and if it was in the theaters, I must've missed it COMPLETELY), but it's not exactly top-shelf work. The guy's gotta take what he can get, but he also is someone who runs the risk of being type-cast based on a couple good performances.

On the whole, I think there are a lot of talented actors in Hollywood who take roles that really do NOT stretch their abilities. Will Ferrel in "Stranger Than Fiction" was...ok. Certainly more tolerable than his usual schtick.

But yeah, type-casting, being cast in films where they just want you to do your usual thing, etc. Plus, I suppose, actors and agents who don't particularly WANT to stretch. They'd rather just cash in and collect their paycheck for doing yet another "I'm just playing myself" role.

Yea, type casting can suck for an actor; but to be fair there is a reason it is done. Some people just can't play certain roles convincingly, and when they try to step out of thier element the movie suffers as a result.

Like Shia Lebouf trying to move away from a goofy dork and play a tough guy in Indiana Jones or Eagle Eye.

Or Tom Hanks trying to step out of his "everyman" archtype and become a rugged leading man by playing a character who is described as "Harrison Ford in Tweed" in The Da Vinci Code.

Im not even going to go into the disaster that happened when the effeminate pretty boy Hayden Christiansan tried to step into the role of a young Darth Vader; regardless of the fact that despite popular belief he is a talented actor.

No matter how good an actor is, sometimes he just can't be convincing in certain roles.

Shai LaDouche can't really act in anything as far as I've seen.He plays one part just like a vehicle that can only go in one gear. The goofy, insecure, bumbling, clumsy, panicing teen dork persona is about the only thing he can do convincingly.Maybe he should stick to Nicklodeon and Disney and stay out of film alltogether? That's just me...I could be wrong.

Here's one that escaped me who should DEFINATELTY be banned from lead roles and pretty much anything to do with film period.

Justin Timberlake...HE SUCKS BIG TIME.He irritates me just as much as Shai LaDouche.Just god awful to watch on screen and spit out lines.I just wish he would go away.

Good point. Like Clint says at the end of Magnum Force: "A man's got to know his limitations."

Why isnt Johnny Depp on this list? The guy has done GREAT character work in the past, but the fact of the matter is, his characters dont belong center-stage. The perfect casting for him was Captain Jack Sparrow in the FIRST Pirates movie (ONLY the first one btw), where the story wasn't about him, he was just running around doing entertaining things. The later films gave him too much involvement, and ruined the whole deal. Johnny Depp is supposed to be the bumbling side-kick, or if they MUST give him a main role, it should be in the same vein as Fear and Loathing, where he's doing a very good impression, not shaming himself with playing an "original" role.

yeah see, everybody has a differant opinion. :lol

Ha, ha... i always use this great quote myself. but i use the earlier line..."A good man always knows his limitations". :thumbsup

Jack Black in School Of Rock is really funny and he absolutely carried the movie. Though, yeah, almost everything else he's done is nowhere as good. One hit wonder?
