A sword by Peter Lyon...

[attachmentid=10119][attachmentid=10119]Around the time Fellowship of The Ring premiered, I discovered the swordsmith who made the swords for the movie was Peter Lyon. I contacted Peter, and at the time he was still taking commissions, so I took my place "in line".... little did I know I would be in that line for nearly six years.
In that time I have traded countless emails with Peter and have come to have a great deal of respect for him and his work. He has since finished the LOTR movies and also Chronicles of Narnia and is still under the employ of WETA.... However, since I did NOT back out of my commission, he has recently contacted me and told me he is nearly finished with my sword.
This sword is actually a design of his own loosely inspired by several swords from Lord of the Ring.
The most noteable influences are the crossguard, which is very similar to Glamdring, Gandalfs sword, and the blade , handle and pommel are similar to Aragorns ranger sword.

I will start with the original drawing that Peter did for me years ago...... (note, the drawing speaks of brass fittings and oxblood colored leather.... that has since changed, but the overrall design has not...)

One thing thats really noteworthy and UNIQUE about Peters swords is his INCREDIBLE ablity to do some of the most insanly deep, yet straight hollowgrinds on blades.... ALL of the LOTR blades had hollowground blades and its just really impressive......... sort of his "signature" style I guess...
Im a sword geek so i notice these things from a mile away....

Right now the sword is being sent off to a fellow craftsman friend of Peter's who will be doing the leather covering for the handle and scabbard...... this is the same guy that did all the sword leather work for the LOTR movies...

The coolest thing about this design is that it COULD have been in the movies...... :)

I would say it was well worth the wait.

:eek Absolutely beautiful.. :eek

Is it a display only sword, or the real deal?
[/b]

I dont play with wallhangers lol

This is the REAL deal. just like the movie swords, the only difference is Peter actually sharpened this sword for cutting.

Glad to see you hung in there. Sounds like it really paid off for you. The sword os awesome (and the story behind it) is awesome. I can't wait to see the finished work. Post pictures please. :D

Someone asked about if its functional... yes it is...... i asked Peter about the steel type and Rockwell C hardness and heres what he said:

David

The blade steel is SUP9, a japanese grade of spring steel. It has slightly less carbon than 5160 (but only by about .02%) but what I like is that it contains about 1.5% silicon, making it very shock resistant. The heat treat on the blade will be slightly variable, but I think not less than Rc 48 even in a couple of soft spots, and up to Rc 54 on most of it. The fittings are all mild steel, either cut from solid or formed from cold-rolled steel sheet.

:eek NICE.

Very um.. Ranger-ee.
It looks incredible.

I still think your Maeglas rules the roost though. :)

Maeglas? I dont have a maeglas..... do you mean GWAILAS made by John Lundemo?

Here are some new pictures..

another of the guard to scabbard fitment...

a blade sharpness test........ Peter shaved some paper with it...

and AT LAST. we get to see the handle color. The handle is just awaiting fittings being made for it...... Also the scabbard is still be leather covered as well...

You were referring to Gwailas (wind leaf) made by John Lundemo of www.odinblades.com

(The big one, the other one is the sword of peru, also by John....)

I wanted to do a cluseup of the above picture to show the radius where the tang meets the edge....
this is a sign of a well made blade...

Man I'm a sword addict (or someone else said, I'm THE sword addict).
And I should tell you how much envious I am. :D
I have a dream sword in my mind (and on paper and also on my HD) from ages, that needs only a swordsmith and a lot of money... You are really lucky, and this sword is pure art.
Congratulations. ;)
