3D printed Death Star (Rogue One version - Ø 1.07m / 42.51')

There are some docking bays (but no ships):

Just wondering if you have any plans you are using for the painting, I have started building a death star pc case for my wife and the bit I'm stuck for is the painting part. It is only 18" so I don't need as much detail as you are doing for it. Yours does look amazing. Here is mine for referance. Also need to find out the size needed to cut out for the dome.

I use this image as a template. The back is missing I draw it randomly.

This is wonderful work...I like the approach and execution. This is one prop that I've wanted to do for a long time but hadn't really worked out the best method...this might be it!
Presumably if u could get hold of a large enough plastic ball u could avoid printing all the sphere pieces and just do the trench, dish and poles.
Did u have to do much editing to the base mesh to make it printable?

The biggest problem was to cut the ball, the trench, the dish and the north pole in pieces.
You could buy an acryllic sphere or two hemispheres but they are expensive.
For me printing the sphere was the best solution. I don't remember how many kilos filament i needed, but I think 12-15 kilos, so the complete sphere costed about 300 euros.

For me, I had this old model kit, which is 8 plastic pieces you glue together and that part is done. But after years of mine not painted, in 2013 I had wanted to make it better and a bit more accurate. You can see the it finished as my spinning avatar.
(And to not try and take over this thread by any means, only going to post a few pics. I do have a thread on here for it, but I had used photobucket and I literally get an email from them everyday saying I need to pay now to host all my old pics....nah)

This is what the model box looked like. The detailing, which is raised panels are completely wrong. Wasn't much I could do about that.

If you have seen Rob's awesome death star, thats what I based all my detail on, and how I even found this site.
I started by painting every single panel the dark gray. Very rough looking here. (The gray had a slight gloss/shine to it, I wish I had gotten pure flat)

After that, I took the light gray and messed with the nozzle and it made the speckled spots over the darker sections.

Wasn't happy with the dish, so fixed it up a bit.

I then used a pencil that draws with a darker tone and drew in each line, one by one best I could. Also painted the drench a darker color to help fix it up.

Since I didn't have a way to get a light in it, I used glow in the dark paint and a thumb tack, dot by dot. A black light makes it really shine.

By the end, this was the best I was going to get that model, also considering its a bit smaller than a basket ball. Guess thats a little more than a few pics, but hopefully that helps with ideas....although it was a LOT of work that took 5 or 6 months.

Knowing/seeing your work GEEK1138 I'm wondering if it would be safe for our general health to see you build a Death Star.:eek::eek:

Impressive, i've only started 3d printing this year and when i see something that large i now know the pain of how long it takes.

as you mentioned the pre done bought spheres are crazy expensive.
