3D Printed Crystal Skull from Indiana Jones and KOTCS

Life's been so busy, so it's been a minute since I posted around here. That being said, I recently started a new job at Formlabs and have had access to some of their incredible larger format printers.

I decided that it was time to use that to my advantage to start crossing items off of my collection wish list.

The first big item that I was able to do that with was the crystal skull. While it's far from my favorite Indy movie, I can't deny that I think it's an amazing and cool prop.

I used Formlabs biomed clear resin to print this thing. In the end, it amounted to 4.5 liters of resin used, and the finished piece weighs over 10 pounds.
I also finally got around to stuffing some of the iridescent gift wrapping plastic into the hollow cavity to give it that crystal-like brain structure.

This thing also took an incredible amount of wet-sanding and polishing to get it to where I wanted it to be, even with as clean as the print came out. I used mineral oil after all of that to polish it up.

Interesting color choice for the resin, can you show us a side view, from the photos I can't tell if it's all perspective warpage or if thats the 3d model? Love this prop

I have a side view shot in there, unless there’s a specific variation you’re looking for?

As for the color, it was a bit of a surprise— the biomed clear resin I used looks very blue tinted in smaller pieces, but when built up in very thick parts, like the front of the skull, it was very purple, which I honestly thought looked really cool, though not crazy accurate to the movie coloring.

Someday I may run one off in our traditional clear just to get a different color scheme.

Really really cool!
Thank you! I’m very happy with how it came out.
That's a lotta resin!
That's insane, brilliant, lot of resin tho
A lot of resin is an understatement I tapped out two full cartridges on a day when we had a bad snow storm, so I didn’t make it into the office to check on it. Because it sat for an extended period of time, I ended up with a bit of a seam line on the skull which I then did a ton of sanding and polishing on to remove.

So an update to share— I reprinted a second skull in Formlabs’ regular clear resin. Much happier with the results.
