3d Printable Vader Helmet File

Nice work... Kinda printer did you buy?

I am most likely gonna print the dome at 0.3 layer height as well. The dome by my last calculation is like 3 days of straight printing at 0.2. Anything that requires fine detail I can always knock that piece down to 0.2 or 0.1

I've got a Maker Select from Monoprice. It's the same thing as the Duplicator i3 by Wanhao. Cheap and simple, but it's been getting the job done so far. Yeah for the dome pieces on this Stormtrooper helmet the 4 different parts of it are showing nearly 12 hours each to print at 0.2. 0.3 will help the time but it's all the supports that have to be printed that cause it to take so long. I removed the supports just to see what the time would be for the piece itself and it cut it down to a little over 5 hours.

Oh ouch.. That is a lot of time wasted on support... The top 4 sections of my Vader dome are mega long too... Maybe need to fiddle with Slic3r and see if there is a better orientation to print with.

Yeah I fired off one section of the dome last night at 9:00 and at 7:30 this morning when I left for work it had about 10% left. Knock on wood, my printer has been reliable once the first few layers are done so I haven't had to babysit it.

I downloaded the files from http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:391664

Just finished the third part last night. After looking at it I can see a few things on it that aren't quite accurate, mostly that the frown looks to be too big so I think I've decided now I'm going to paint it like a Shadowtrooper helmet. EFX Stormtrooper helmets are around $170 right now so at that price I may just order one of those for my collection.

I spent a good couple hours yesterday fortifying the structure of my printer. Being an acrylic frame it was kinda flexible which translates less quality prints especially as the Z axis height gets greater. I added close to 8 feet of 1 inch aluminium angle to to the outside edges of my printer and also affixed it to the 3/4 inch plywood that it is sitting on. It is pretty darn solid now. I cannot wait till my parts come in so I can put it back together and test it out.

Well the mask is printed and glued together. I started to play with some filler a little too.

That's looking great, the filler is certainly making a huge difference in hiding the 3D print lines. Can't wait to see this finished. :thumbsup

Roughneckone :cool

Well after some illness of me and my prints... I have a couple more update pics for you. The mask is about 60% finished. Some sanding and fine detail work then it will be ready for paint. The big 1/4 sections of the top of the top have proven to be quiet the stress test for my printer... Each section takes about 12 hours and was overheating my y axis stepper about 8 hours in causing my prints to fail... Took me several goes at it to figure out why. But I got it dialed in and it appears to be working well again.

Just regular bondo brand filler and filler primer... Have to wait till the weather gets better here before I can make some serious progress.

The dome is done and welded/epoxied together. Starting on the chest armor now. Cannot wait till the weather warms up enough to start working on the finishing of these pieces... I have been banished from the house lol due to the fumes.

Time spent? Yikes... If I had to venture a guess not including failed prints because of issues The dome was probably 75 hours. The mask was probably close to the same.
I am about 1/3 the way through printing the shoulder armor. Production is going much smoother now although I am going to replace the crap linear bearings on the X and Y axis with IGUS style plastic bushings.
I cannot wait till I get my new printer built... These cheap chinese printers are just that... cheap.
