3 foot tall lego minifig ... Making Frank an Operation Game, and adding animatronics

Re: 3 foot tall lego minifig

:lolSUCCESS AND DISASTER:facepalm

First the Success; the molds came out pretty good. I learned a lot, and what to improve next time (more on that later):

Now the Disaster; the clay i used for Franky's head shrunk way more that anticipated, cracked, and fell off his structure:

Nothing a little superglue and bondo can't fix. First I found all the fallen pieces, and glues then back to their respective places, and the slathered on the bondo:
Working the top:

After a bit of sanding:

All better. A bit rougher than i would like (well a LOT rougher than I would like) but due to the ever decreasing amount of time, it will have to do:

While I was fixing Franky, My wife and I were also putting our new molds to good use. The first hand (my first ever slush cast part) came out good, but a bit thin. The second one was perfect (as well as all the subsequent ones). The arms on the other hand were a giant, and I mean GIANT pain is the %&*(! Huge flash lines, difficult de-molding, leaking all over the place. It took us about 3 tries on each arm to get decent parts. I think the biggest problem was the jacket material. Cast plaster sucks. However, we were able to get some decent parts and lots of knowledge along the way:

Casting a hand:

I'm so happy ... and tired ... so very tired:

And finally, Franky with his arms and head ..... IT'S ALIVE .... IT'S ALIVE .... well almost

Wow, they are really looking like real legion figures. Just a few days to go, keep up the good work.

How have I missed this thread all this time? This is AWESOME! You've nailed all of those tiny Lego man details perfectly.

Re: 3 foot tall lego minifig

Well, I had the bone head move of the century. I accidently left Franky's head outside last night, and it rained. So needless to say, Franky's head needs even more repair work :( Water and Clay don't mix .... I am never using this clay again, what I thought would be a quick shortcut turned out to be a giant pain in the you know what.

Those castings look amazing. Keep up the awesome work.
Thanks, they came out better than expected.

I'm not sure about legion figures, but if you ment Lego, then thanks ;) They should be done this afternoon if i can get Franky's head fixed again.

Well, there are a ton of awesome threads going on at this site, so my thread getting burried under all that awesome is understandable. I glad you found us. Thanks.

Re: 3 foot tall lego minifig

Not sure which is better the fact that these look awesome or that your totally going to make it on time!

Great work!

Re: 3 foot tall lego minifig

Dude I would love a set also if you ever offer!!
I will let you know if I ever do offer anything. If I do, it will probably be a kit for the buyer to assemble. I think a finished one would be way to expensive. Just out of curiosity, about what would you be willing to pay for a kit? I'm new to all this and don't have the foggiest of ideas (well, that's not true, I have an idea of what I would charge, but I have no idea if that is line with reality).

Re: 3 foot tall lego minifig

Well tonight was a fiasco. If it could go wrong, it did :facepalm. I'm sorry I don't have alot of pictures tonight, since I was kinda stressed and working super fast and I forgot, but I will show what i got.

First, Franky's head was still soaked from last nights drenching. So i removed all the clay and bondo, and started from scratch.

Decided to build up and carve out a new hair piece out of bondo. Desperate times call for desperate measures.

This is about the time where i started forgetting to take pictures, so I will just skip to the end.

Not as cool looking as the original, but for pooping something out last minute, I think its ok.

Next, While I was prepping to paint the face of the mad scientist, it rolled off the table and broke. Got it pieced back together, patched up, and smoothed out (thanks to the wife). But the primer reacted with the existing yellow paint and did a really cool looking crackle effect, but which was something I really didn't think would look good on a Mad scientist; Maybe a zombie, but not a mad scientist. Luckily, I had an unfinished spare head. Its missing the little top nub, but hey, desperate times call for desperate measures. (Sorry, no pictures)

Those two cluster!@#^$ took up most of my night. While I was copeing with the reality of my world, my wife was busy cleaning up, and painting the various unfinished parts.

And finally, as a single victory for the night, I mounted the torsos to the legs, and mounted the arms to the torsos.

So, tomorrow night, after glass blowing classes, I get to paint the two faces, and they should be done :)

I'm going to bed now.

Re: 3 foot tall lego minifig

Wow, your workmanship is incredible. Really nice work, the kids are going to go crazy.

Re: 3 foot tall lego minifig

It's Alive ... finally :D

I not going to say that this last night didn't go without any hickups, and I'm also not going to say that i broke one of the shoulder joints on the scientist and had to glue his arm to his side. All I'm going to say is that they are done. I learned a lot along this road, and my next Megafigs will be even better. All in All, I am very happy with how they turned out.

I will take some better pictures this weekend with some better lighting. I'll also write up a lessens learned, and post that up to; more for my own info, but might be beneficial to others as well.

Thanks you everyone for your encouragement and excitement. I'm not sure they would have turned out as well without ya'lls support.

Re: 3 foot tall lego minifig

They look fantastic, man. Well done.

Incidentally, your detailing (artwork), though barely mentioned, is stellar.

Yeah, I kinda glossed over the painting process, mainly because I didn't feel that it tells a great stroy with picture, and I was really rushing at the end there. Basically the pictures would be lots of blue painters tape, and lost of color blobs. Kinda hard to tell what anything looks like until all the tape is removed at the end. After all the color was blocked in and tape removed, I went back with black acrylic paint to outline everything. In the future, I will try to document this stage better.

Really, really nice. You should be very pleased with your efforts.
Thanks. I am very pleased with the outcome and the knowledge I gained. Already thinking of ways to make them easier to build for the next go round.

These look amazing :thumbsup
Thanks.

Re: 3 foot tall lego minifig ... Finished

This is FAN-FRAKKING-TASTIC!

I'm really looking forward to your next write up on the tips, tricks, or "lessons learned" you had during your build. As awesome and inspiring as it is to see the amazing finished things people churn out here, it's threads like those that end up giving me that next push to finish something that's been sitting on my workbench for the last week or two.

Great job sir. Kudos and such!
