I'm thinking about putting together Charlie Prince's rig from 3:10 to Yuma

He uses a pair of S&W Schofields in a darker finish

I found several sites that carry a replica gun that's non-firing and under $100 but in a Nickel finish (see pics)

Can this be darkened to look like the gun from the movie pic?

thanks!

If the entire frame is metal and it can be disassembled, you can take a Bernzomatic Cylinder, MAPP Gas torch and carefully heat the metal (in a well ventilated area), and then cool it rapidly with a small piece of folded cloth, damp with some Birchwood Casey, Gun Blue or Brass Black. and wipe it down.

Then repeat that process until you get the finish you're going for.

If you want to get that rust effect, after you've darkened it, heat it up again, and then put a coat of Gun Blue on the frame and let it sit, it will chemically oxidize the metal, and the oxidation will stop after you rinse it off in water.

Unless you have an extra oven in your backyard, I wouldn't recommend this method.

Also, another issue is the oven will not get hot enough to open up the nickel finish, so it will be irrelevant what you put on it, it will stay shiny regardless.

Your best bet is to just paint it, but beware the denix grips are very hard to remove. It's not a real screw holding them together, and you have to break it apart to get the grips off. You'll need to find another fastener once you do that.

Also, beware if you take the schofield apart, it's hard to put back together.

Thanks Noeland!

I'm not very impressed with the Denix replicas at all. Have you seen them in person? The finish doesn't seem to be that nice?

A Japanese company called CRAFT APPLE WORKS (CAW) looks very nice, but I don't think they sell to the USA market?

CAW - Schofield

Somewhere around $350 with the current exchange rate, but this replica looks amazing!

You're welcome. I used the black and brass model as a base gun for a few props I built recently and had to take them apart a few times. It was a pain in the butt every time. I installed lanyard rings and an entirely new cylinder and barrel.

If you can get a decent plug fire cap version or airsoft version, do it. The denix models are OK though if you can't afford those. Certainly nice looking wall hangers.

If you're planning to mod them though, just beware. I ruined a couple of taps too, thanks to the metal.
