2001 Monolith build

I grow wine grapes on my little vineyard.
I now have a new vintage....

"The monolith"

Now I think it should only be used to label much larger bottles...... THE MONOLITH......like two handed carry bottles

Tonight we opened the first of the Monolith wine vintage. One of the questions I always have is that when I give some of my wine to someone and they open the bottle later, I always wonder how my wine will stand up against other wines? But tonight I can report that if someone does open a bottle of my wine to put to the test, standing up is the one thing that they will not soon be doing! My wine packs a punch!

With this trick, do you need the same type and color of background as you do foreground .... to get the mirror to melt into it, ya? Trying to wrap my brain around how it works. Do you have an inspiration picture of this trick used elsewhere, previously?

well......have a look at what i did today !

the result is "kinda' close to what i thought it would look like.

I was surprised to learn that you dont tilt the mirror down, but rather its tilted up to give the effect of a floating monolith.

Im kinda happy with my days work.

if I had more time and wanted to chip away some of the support cement, then it might be better, but thats a lot of work that I just am too old and im out of time to finish.

I did not design the monolith with the mirror in mind, so if I were to build another monolith one day i would change how the bottom is made...
and I would not dump so much cement at the top of the trench that it made this mirror trick hard to make happen.

but anyway...lets look at some photos!

the floating effect is best viewed from a helping distance.

all I know is that someone told me that a mirror would make it look like its hovering.

But I have no history of such things, and I dont know anyone who I could talk to that has done this

I think that "now" its finished!

The whole project was a beast to build.

I will always remember that first day.
and then the day I almost killed my old body dragging the monolith through the woods to the site.

I remember the trench I dug for the monolith's legs to stand in.
and the battle to get the thing standing up
and then the trips in my little Honda FIT to get the many bags of cement.
and the struggle to make sure the monolith stayed straight while the cement got hard.
and the weather!....the windstorm that had high winds around 70 mph, and how the next day I walked out through the woods not sure what I would find still standing?
and the epoxy coating, and then the painting.

and building the little fence to help people far enough away so as to not see all the construction flaws.

and now....the effect of floating.

Its been a real battle....
But in a few days it will be the 4th of July, and we will have many guests over to our vineyard, and they will be given a tour of the backyard.
and I wonder how many will know what the big black billboard is?
