2/3 Scale R2/ Robby mashup

i was in between projects and wasting time scrolling through FB, and a piece of concept art by artist Jeff Carlisle crossed my screen, a cross between an astromech and Robby the Robot from MGM’s Forbidden Planet.

I have usually focused more on building blasters or Millenium Falcon related things, and always considered an R2 unit (or others) as too big a spaceholder for the apartment, but this image really spoke to me.

I was pointed in the direction of maybe building a different scale. I remembered seeing several droids at the Orlando Celebration that were 2/3 scale of the full size droids. Those, I thought, might be more stairs-to-the-apartment friendly.

So, here I go, throwing down the gauntlet.

My first step is swapping the vents out for Robby’s chest greeblies. At this point, I’m working up a small, 3D printable model to see and feel what I’m getting myself into

The first identifiable astromech piece (downloaded from Astromech.net, and shrunk to 2/3 scale) was waiting on the printer for me this morning

Yeah, I was pretty pleased with it, too. That came off my CR-10, using .15 layer height. I was a little worried about losing some integrity or resolution with scaling it down from the original.

After finally finding a decent picture of Robby’s gyros (screenshot from a video on YouTube demonstrating his functions and control board), I worked up a planetary gear system to let the gyros I downloaded from Thingiverse be able to rotate. The real gyros look like they are static on their stems, but I like how the downloaded gyro moves, and since I’m already playing fast and loose with Screen Accuracy anyway, I’m going with these. All of those parts came off my CR-10. The bottom gear is still a prototype, which will eventually need teeth on the outside to catch a motor.

While my brain (and, ultimately, the CR-10) was chewing on those parts, the Taz chugged away on first, the skirt, and then one of the outboard foot covers.

I've shied away from these type of items/projects because of space limitations in a condo, but this looks a little more manageable so far. Can't wait to see how it goes for you. (y)

I cannot take credit for the original size choice.

I should mention (should have mentioned sooner) another inspiration for this project in terms of size is Fuzzual’s build thread on here of his R2-D2 2/3 size. SofaKing01 pointed me to his Youtube channel episode which focused on his 2/3 scale droids, and they are fun. He has already been a great source of advice.

As a kid I had a weird wind-up walking R2 knock off about the same size as the Kenner figure. White body, blue feet and arms with a clear dome. Seeing this just took me back about 35 years!

You know the voice that gives you directions from your GPS or phone, when you make a wrong turn? In that nice, patient voice, it says, "Recalculating..."?

I'm having trouble finding a piece of 12" ID PVC sewer pipe (unless I want to buy a full 20 foot long stick- not so much), so I'm starting to look at printing the body instead. There are files available, but I have to remember to scale everything down (That first utility arm I printed will NOT fit in the body. Fortunately, I wasn't waiting for that print to finish)

I'll get more pics up tomorrow

Where are these files and where can i get a head dome for it im building it woohoo.

The R2 files are from Mr. Baddeley’s 3d printed droids, version 2. The dome started from a thingiverse model that I adapted in sketchup. As for the head dome, I assume you mean the clear dome, and I plan, at some point, to vacuform a couple (one for R&D, and two more, because I know if I only make the one, I will get twenty minutes from “done” and a dremel tool will decide, “No, I want to go THAT way instead”).

Robby has been sitting, waiting, and looking at me for a while saying, “Hey, would you please get back to work on my drives?” There have been a few distractions
