Hi all,
Just wanted to spend some time thanking Helios Models for their amazing 1/650 scale Enterprise D. They recently came out with a kit, and built a few complete models. This is one of their complete buildups as I would never be able to do the crazy things they did with this ship. Please visit Helios Models here: Start | Helios
Mods, I tried to figure out if this was considered to be "close enough" to studio scale. Previous models of the enterprise D have been in both General Modeling and Studio scale categories, so please move this thread if you feel it is appropriate.
I had always wanted to build a 1/650 fleet of enterprises and now my dream is one step closer to completion. More than 15 years ago, someone I will not name made a 1/650 scale enterprise D, and I never received it. It has always pissed me off that I never got the model and now Helios has filled that void! Thank goodness, because in my opinion, Helios' new kit and buildup are so much more accurate than anything that has ever been offered in this scale.
this is now my 2nd purchase from Helios Models - They also did the buildup of the 1/650 Enterprise E model that I have on display. They did not produce that kit, they only did the buildup.
Both the E and D have LCARS base displays that have certain buttons that can be touched to activate certain functions on the ship. Both have a warp button, photon torpedoes, phasers, and a startup sequence that has to be seen/heard to believe. In fact, you can.... check out the startup of the enterprise D. This video is so much better than anything I could have shot... and the sound and everything is not added post, it is actually built into the base of the model!
Daniel from Helios models has always been a pleasure to deal with. Even with the time difference they have always responded to any questions or comments that I may have had in usually less than a day. I got regular updates of the ridiculously complicated buildup. Pictures addressing all of my concerns, especially saucer sag were ALL addressed. As you all know, I keep my props forever and therefore, I can't have this heavy saucer drooping over time when I pass this thing onto my kids.
There's a welded steel armature. It doesn't get any stronger than that!
Maybe it's just me, but I love seeing how a prop is made. I feel it makes you appreciate the hard work and dedication that went into building a prop, and appreciate the final product that much more.
Anyways, the delivery company was able to free my giant box from customs, and even though this is a HUGE model, the entire ship arrived completely intact. Thanks to the entire box being filled with custom cut foam by Helios.
I highly recommend Helios Models. They have outstanding customer service. They give you a quality finished product. I'll be staring at this enterprise fascinated by all the little details for hours.
I also really really like how they mixed up the white and blue lights on the saucer and the engineering section. I feel it adds a bit of realism to the ship. Everyone's crew quarters should be decorated a little different.
Okay - onto my pics - which aren't as good as they should be... but you get the idea. Plus, my youngest daughter LOVES them. So what more could a parent want.
Enjoy!
