1/650 Enterprise D - by Helios Models - LOTS of pics

Hi all,

Just wanted to spend some time thanking Helios Models for their amazing 1/650 scale Enterprise D. They recently came out with a kit, and built a few complete models. This is one of their complete buildups as I would never be able to do the crazy things they did with this ship. Please visit Helios Models here: Start | Helios

Mods, I tried to figure out if this was considered to be "close enough" to studio scale. Previous models of the enterprise D have been in both General Modeling and Studio scale categories, so please move this thread if you feel it is appropriate.

I had always wanted to build a 1/650 fleet of enterprises and now my dream is one step closer to completion. More than 15 years ago, someone I will not name made a 1/650 scale enterprise D, and I never received it. It has always pissed me off that I never got the model and now Helios has filled that void! Thank goodness, because in my opinion, Helios' new kit and buildup are so much more accurate than anything that has ever been offered in this scale.

this is now my 2nd purchase from Helios Models - They also did the buildup of the 1/650 Enterprise E model that I have on display. They did not produce that kit, they only did the buildup.

Both the E and D have LCARS base displays that have certain buttons that can be touched to activate certain functions on the ship. Both have a warp button, photon torpedoes, phasers, and a startup sequence that has to be seen/heard to believe. In fact, you can.... check out the startup of the enterprise D. This video is so much better than anything I could have shot... and the sound and everything is not added post, it is actually built into the base of the model!

Daniel from Helios models has always been a pleasure to deal with. Even with the time difference they have always responded to any questions or comments that I may have had in usually less than a day. I got regular updates of the ridiculously complicated buildup. Pictures addressing all of my concerns, especially saucer sag were ALL addressed. As you all know, I keep my props forever and therefore, I can't have this heavy saucer drooping over time when I pass this thing onto my kids.
There's a welded steel armature. It doesn't get any stronger than that!

Maybe it's just me, but I love seeing how a prop is made. I feel it makes you appreciate the hard work and dedication that went into building a prop, and appreciate the final product that much more.

Anyways, the delivery company was able to free my giant box from customs, and even though this is a HUGE model, the entire ship arrived completely intact. Thanks to the entire box being filled with custom cut foam by Helios.

I highly recommend Helios Models. They have outstanding customer service. They give you a quality finished product. I'll be staring at this enterprise fascinated by all the little details for hours.

I also really really like how they mixed up the white and blue lights on the saucer and the engineering section. I feel it adds a bit of realism to the ship. Everyone's crew quarters should be decorated a little different.

Okay - onto my pics - which aren't as good as they should be... but you get the idea. Plus, my youngest daughter LOVES them. So what more could a parent want.

Enjoy!

Is this your model? I have one but the steel plate is too thick and I have yet to receive the replacement, lighting kit, decals, or anything else I've ordered. Did you get all of your parts?

I also have their Excelsior in 1/460 scale on order. They just released a new video about it that has me drooling.

Holy cow that is amazing!

Been eyeing up this kit while also trying to talk myself out of it…

She’s a beaut! Congrats!

I did not buy the model kit. I asked Helios to build this model for me. It arrived fully built.
I did read that some people who bought the kit had plates that were too thick, and that Helios would be sending replacements. I think a few people received them already. From my experience with them, I'm sure your parts will arrive.

Yea! I saw the excelsior/ncc/ nx and the enterprise B too! I'm going to see if I can get the enterprise B from them in 1/650 scale to match the other ships I have.

My scales aren't going to be the same but I'm not overly worried about that. I have multiple scales already. I did start out ordering the 1/650 Excelsior for the same reason—to match my Enterprise D—but decided I really wanted the bigger one.

Yours look great!

Hey mind if I ask about the table you have those on? I ordered the same base from Helios as well (mine again will come as a kit), and I've been pondering a table for it. Your table looks to be a perfect fit.

Sure! - they're just table legs.. the base that Helios provides is already a slab of wood. It was difficult to find a table to fit perfectly, so I figured I just turn the base itself into a tabletop. I screwed table legs onto it from below after quickly removing the "feet" installed by helios underneath.
You can pick what design suits you. The size of my legs were 28" across.

Hi, I'm new to the forum and I've embarked on the Helios 1/650 Enterprise D - I am having trouble figuring out how to power up the board provided in the lighting kit? Would you be able to give me some pointers? I can't seem to raise Helios? Cheers, Phil aka sprueverse

Hi Phil. I haven't started mine yet but I have used boards before. What have you tried that isn't working?

I will go pull mine out later and take a look, but I figured I'd start by asking what you may have tried.

I also messaged you on IG earlier about your build! Looks great so far, and I bought that resin applicator you used for your windows.

Hi, thanks for replying to me. Funny, I just got off the phone with Daniel from Helios, and we are going to Zoom on Thursday. I got out the board to test some circuits, and I can't get any lights to fire up. He mentioned I should see a small light on the board indicating it's on, but I do not have that. I wonder if I've missed something or if I'm not plugged in correctly even though I have followed the schematic. Glad my video was helpful, I get deeper into windows and UV putty in part two. Cheers, Phil

First you have the, the actual Airwolf RC Model,

Then you have an Airwolf Helmet. Apparently Steve died after taking my money and failing to deliver my helmet,

You have more Vader helmets than I can count,

A HUGE!!!!!!!!! finished basement,

A full 1/1 everything,

Now the E, D, G. Well hell why don't you just get the Excelsior, and F and fully break my heart.

In the immortal words of Barney The Dinosaur:

"I hate you, I really, really do. Won't you understand why I do!"

So - with the board supplied - I had to get a new power supply because the one that was given had a European plug. Did you make sure you have the right power output coming from your power supply? I've taken a picture of mine so you can match up the power output..

Also - afterwards, you just strip the wire and hook up the power and ground.

hope the pics help.

HAHA... Always nice to meet a fellow Airwolf fan.... Yea - it really sucks about Stull.
Side project if you want... make an airwolf flight controller. It's a bit of a pain sourcing an accurate one with the correct buttons, but once you do the rest is pretty easy.. Ignore the random asian kid in the background doing hw

(sorry for the derail... Enterprise D 4ever!)

But yea - I do have a refit, B and C in 1/650 scale on order. I like the design of the F... but in 1/650 scale it's going to be too big. Thus far no one has been crazy enough to make one so large. Here's hoping the builder(s) come through....

Is anyone producing a replacement A-B deck for the Helios model since the kit model is rather soft in the details?

While the D looks amazing, I can’t help but notice the E; my eye is drawn to it, is there something wrong with the Starboard Nacelle pylon? It looks as though it’s drooping to the side compared with the Port Nacelle pylon?

Hey! Yea....good eye! unfortunately that nacelle is drooping a bit. I have yet to take a heat gun to it and try and fix it.
Can't say this was the fault of Helios Models. This has happened to others who built this particular kit (which Helios models did not make). I should have supported it. I had the E for a while longer than the D.
