1:48 Scale TIE Fighter

I put together part of a TIE Solar Panel to get a feel for it for when I do a Studio TIE. I am liking how it is turning out, so I want to mold and cast what I have (or make a new one first with less flaws and cast it) and turn it in to a complete 1:48 TIE. Here is a picture:

Yes, that is the AMT/Ertl TIE Panel next to it, and yes it is way too small for 1:48. You can read more at my blog: http://www.eulercircles.com.

That's ok. For me, it will serve as a mock-up/practice for my big TIE. I build things like this because it's fun, not because I just want a TIE sitting in my living room.

Here's the thing though - will the Fine Molds REALLY be 1:48? Their 1:72 is much too small. If the Studio TIE is 1:24, which I am pretty sure it is, then the Fine Molds 1:72 TIE is really 1:96 (it is 1/4 the size in any linear dimension of the Studio TIE).

Re: 1:48 TIE Fighter

I re-made the Panel, and it turned out very well. I was thinking, if I am already making the center portion along with my wings, why not go ahead and make interceptor wings too?

However, I cannot for the life of me think of anything that would work good for the solar portion of the Interceptor wings. There is no "prismatic" stuff at that scale... Maybe plain old screen would work? What do you guys think?

Re: 1:48 TIE Fighter

You could get a ERTL X1 and cast the solar areas... you could then make a few and with some careful fitting make a large "sheet" of the stuff that you could mold again then cut as you need... You could do a similar thing with the Action fleet toys... a lot of work but it might be cool...

What is the X1? Do you mean Darth Vader's or the Interceptor? I really don't like this area on either kit... Really wish I had some of the Fine Molds panels, but it's too small by half!!!

I've never seen the toy, though...

Re: 1:48 TIE Fighter

My pristine solar panel warped :unsure. That's OK. I have some ideas, some new things to try with it, so I will rebuild it and then strike a mold soon after it's done. I am going to spend some time with the center ball and cross-tube before I do that however, and after I finish my 1:48 Y Wing. I am making some more progress on that one...

Cant wait to see a finished item there. Keep it up.

I have been pretty busy lately, but I will get back to this soon. There was some miscommunication with my Y Wing parts being printed, so I am still waiting for those. When I get some time I am going to work on some more CAD models for this one...

I got around to making the structures that surround the tube and come off the sides of the ball. I kept going, and here's what I have so far:

Sorry, but I forgot to turn perspective on for these. The cross tube will not be printed - it's just there for looks. Pictured is a top half, bottom half, and the truncated cone for the rear... whatever it is.

Now, as soon as I get my Y Wing parts printed, I can get these done... In the meantime I can finish modeling the few remaining parts...

Here's a few more, with a little progress. I've been bored today, so I got a lot done.

P.S. - the second pic below is roughly actual size on a 1280x1024 screen resolution.
