1/4 scale Mixed Media Tauntaun My first attempt at anything like this.

To give a little backstory I collect the Sideshow Premium Format statues and have also incorporated some of the Diamond Select Ultimate Quarter Scale figures into my collection by giving them a few modifications and creating bases for them.
I was recently given the Han Solo Hoth Diamond 1/4 Figure star-wars-ultimate-scale-han-solo-hoth-outfit-1-4.jpg
My original plan was to just sculpt a basic snow base using airdry clay but I then got the idea of attempting to create mixed media a 1/4 scale Tauntaun covered in faux fur with leather saddle etc.

I did a bit of research and ended up finding a thread on here from psimon who was creating a Tauntaun in scale with this figure and a lifesize head mount:

I got some tips from psimon and used his drawing template and measurements as a basis for my own.

I printed off the templates and then cut them all out in card, I then created a layer effect with card and polystyrene and a hot knife to create a basic model to work off of:

I also ordered some faux grey fur, it looks a little dark in the first picture but you can see in the second it isn't that dark, it's also probably a bit long but nothing some scissors wont fix once it is all in place.

This is where I am at right now.

I'm not planning on putting much detail on the body etc as 1 my scultping skills will likely suck (I have no idea what the head is going to look like, and 2 It's going to be covered in fur so I doubt you will see much of it through the fur.

Started attaching the fur will hopefully have this part finished by tomorrow then its on to my attempts at sculpting with the head, hands and feet.

I will also likely be sculpting some of the bags attached to the saddle.

It's a great start, my only suggestion would be some wire reinforcement. Cardboard can sag over time especial with exposure to humidity.

Everything is reinforced with polystyrene which I'm hoping should maintain all the strength needed.
Just been messing around with some faux leather I had for some type of base for the saddle.
I've ordered some flat leather shoe laces for all the reigns and straps and have some other scraps of various pieces fur and fabric for the rolls on the back and the fur around the saddle.

Once I've finished everything I will likely be applying some hair product or watered down PVA to the fur to give it a wet/weathered look, I'll also be applying clumps of snow to the fur.

Added the tail finishing work shortly so this will be last update I make today.
Just the leg and arm on the other side to do tomorrow then its on to the sculpting:confused

Had just enough time today to get the other leg and arm fur attached and then attached to the main body.
Also brought Han with me today too see how he looked on this thing, scale seems about right imo.
I'm a little unhappy with the shade of the fur but I'm hoping I can lighten it up with some type of weathering, it's definitely going to need a hair cut as I think the fur is way too long right now. Going to get the shape for the feet and hands done tomorrow hopefully and then I can start sculpting the claws etc.
My Brown leather shoe lace arrived and it seem to be about the right size for the straps and reigns so I think I'll order more of those.

Looking good so far :thumbsup If I may make a suggestion... I'd swap the rear legs round side to side :)

I did consider that after I'd attached the first leg but the thigh is wrong for face the opposite way.

I've given it a hair cut today:

Also made my first attempt at sculpting today with the hands, I'm fairly pleased with them for my first attempt my plan with the feet and hands is to paint them and then glue some of the loose fur I cut off of the body onto them.

I plan on having all the sculpted parts etc held in place with screws like this so if I come across a better colour fur I can redo the body but reuse the head, hands, feet, saddle etc.

so since Leigh said about the legs they've been really annoying me so I decided to pull them off and try them swapped.... looks much better, can't believe I put them on he wrong way :facepalm

I'll see if there is anyway I can bulk it out.

Finished the majority of the sculpting today, head looks a little slim right now but the fur should bulk other out once it's in place, just got the horns and ears to add.

Have also done the all the paws now, claws, saddle, stirrups and made an attempt at a bag I'll likely scrap the bag and try again though.

Roughly put everything in place to see how it all scales up.
The horns will fit better once they're permanently attached but I'm not attaching them until I've painted them and the head separately.

Hoping to have this completed including the base by next week.
