1/24 Raptor Build

This is the first of three Raptors that are long overdue for me. This one, and the next one are due to a friend who has been more then patient with me over the last <gasp> years. (thanks Mark for your patience) The third will be for me...which is silly considering all the work that went into this kit was based on me wanting a kit for myself....can't believe it took me years to get around to actually making one for me.

This build will be based on the original CG and 1:1 model from the mini-series. It had less detail on the engines and in some of the areas then the one from the series. Since my friend is getting two, he will have this one, unlit based on the original model, and then the 2nd one lit, based on the more detailed CG version. (I'm hoping he will like one of each kind) My idea for the unlit one, is it's sitting, silent in a dark corner of the hanger...unused. It's shut down for the night and sitting. The main door will be open for looking in. (I'm still figuring out how to make the door open and make it so I can ship it...I ordered some magnets for that trick.

For me, this model build has been extremly trying. I have spent far to many hours staring at it trying to figure out what to do. Nothing has come easily, and nothing is working out like I want it to. Lately, I'm trying to just keep myself plugging along promising I will go back and fix things later.

Right now I'm working on fitting, glueing and seaming the major components. Once I have them done I can seal off the interior and start painting the body. These pictures are of the wings (mostly done), the booms (in process), and the engines and vertical stabilizers (as well as the cockpit interior) just resting in place for alignment purposes. In fact, the engines are a little out of line, but they aren't glued in, just resting there. Next up, lots of putty and sanding...then painting!

Also, I think I mentioned, I'm doing this one to look like the original CG model (which also most closely resembles the 1:1) After the mini-series the Raptor got a facelift which added more details, most notably in the engines. The kit comes with both engines, but Ill be using the simple ones for this model and then the more complex ones for the lit one that will follow.

Cool, Can't wait to see how it comes out!

Hey, since you are already building three, how about a fourth? I picked up Jean's kit, he decided he wasn't going to get around to building it and let it go, and it's been collecting dust here too, it's a shame, because they are pretty impressive kits.

I've gotta join kit-hoarders anonymous or something, it's getting out of control.

You've described scratch building in a nut shell there, but it's worth all the trouble isn't. That's beautiful, too good to stop now, you're almost done.

Nice, Jesse. I can't thank you enough for bringing this (kit) to the community. Sadly, mine is still in it's box, as well... :$

Back from vacation and still working ever so slowly through this build. I wanted to try and emulate the mottled coloring and texture seen on the CG model. There is something about the look that I really like...particuarly when not seen up close. Perhaps a silly goal, but one I wanted to play with. This is my third try...and I think it's getting close. The base coat needs a bit more gold, and the weathering is a bit heavy. I'm hoping to lightly wash it a bit and see if I can blend it all together and make it look right to my eye. The comparison is a bit decieving since I just took the picture with on the fly with bad lighting...held next to the monitor the base coat is closer, but still off.

In case anyone is curious, I did the effect with a combination of pigments, washes, light airbrush layers, and hand brushing. It's been a bit of a fun technique to play with.

Id love some ideas on how to make it better.

Also, I'm only currently working in the one obvious section. I decided once I get to a level I like, Ill replicate it on the rest of the craft. It's a little to time consuming to do otherwise.

Thanks

Wow! It looks incredible! This is the one kit I want more than any other and I can't find one anywhere!

any one got any clues??

Well, got a little more done. Weathering is basically complete. Canopy is just sitting there for reference. I need to put the gear on, all the little detail parts, finish some details on the inside...dull coat finish...and more I'm sure...but it's starting to look more real at least. Sorry for the quick poor snaps.

Looks great! Can you tell me more about the base coat?

Thanks for the kind words all.

Sure...The base coat is a combination. I started with a primer and Tamiya Desert Yellow. Then I did layers of Tamiya Buff to get to the basecoat I wanted. Then I used pigments (I dont know the exact colors, but it's a black, a grey, 5 shades of brown, 2 reds, and a white) to do the various color variations. I sealed the pigments with future and did washes with a couple shades of light tan/yellow. Finally, I took a very thinned Tamiya Field Grey (about 80% thinner) to do a light green filter tinge to the whole thing.

Thanks so much for the kind words. I've been staring at this thing for so long it makes me cross-eyed. It's nice to know the effect is well recieved. (and inspires me to keep going! )

I love the mottled panel effect, it really captures the look of the one in the show. What a fantastic build.
