Hi Gang,

Some more forward progress!

Primer!

Lots of primer

This was a delight... I dropped this and cracked the acrylic in half

This old greeblie is getting some much needed attention! Have to sand and fill those horrible edges!

After sanding

Filler added - now we wait

The crack is now taken care of!

Slowly adhering parts together

Greeblie mounts in this general area of the Volvo Panel

I think I'm going to redo this guy...

The second shelf greeblie is almost finished!

Paint!

I laser cut these risers for the buttons

This looks MUCH better!

Getting so close to finishing these greeblies!

Still more filler and sanding needed

I then redesigned and laser cut the new base for the back wall greeblie

So... I found this greeblie sitting in one of the multiple boxes of junk that I have and I really lied it!

And this gave me an idea!

This is the extension panel greeblie box - the area of the cockpit we finally see in TFA

Dang... that plastic piece was a LOT smaller than I thought!

Getting some ideas

The little black frame gave me another idea...

HMMMMM...

I LOVE the arm but I have to redesign so it fits / works in this area. Plus I have two of them to design

Really like the rendering with the real-world objects. You're a very talented individual and it's great to see how you visualize different options.

Thanks! Starkiller's rendering uses simple water heaters as the main object and of course hoses and other misc items. I'm sure it's not a fan favorite but imagine a room full of these horizontal water heaters, covered with greeblies, hoses, pipes that are dripping with oil and other types of weathering.

Thanks so much! The sketches are my own and the 3D rendering is fellow RPFer Steve Starkiller. I wish they were a Joe Johnston original! He was such an influence on me as a kid. I still pour through all the SW sketch books soaking in all his renderings.

I've had the pleasure of chatting with JJ last year as he shared stories of his time with ILM and of course chatting about the Falcon! That was a dream come true!

I have several more engine concepts I've been meaning to post... Thanks again for the kind words!

Looks like I found my groove. Believe it or not... I've actually hit a creative wall with these extension panels! I really want to capture the look and feel of the OT so badly that I may actually be missing the mark.

Any ideas guys?

Depends on what you are after. I'd imagine instruments would be concentrated in the cockpit and gunnery stations. The remainder of the Falcon would mostly be functional parts,perhaps with local single-purpose controllers, wouldn't it?

Functional parts tray (wartime British aircraft radio):


Would these kind of things be suitable inspiration?

That's awesome! Great work, man. I've always hated how the books have this massive cargo hold back there by the engines but you never see it on film, and whenever they do repairs it's up front. That thing should be loaded up like you guys have done it, greeble nation! Keep up the good work man I always love seeing progress here.

The parts tray is exactly the type of look I've been considering with a SW used universe look and feel! LOVE IT! I'm also considering revisiting the quad cannon design I did for the foot well. Not a duplicate but maybe something similar?

I agree! I can't imagine the cargo hold being that spacious. As large and as wide the engine cluster is, it would only make sense that that back area be completely full of engine mass, vents, tubes, pipes, wires, etc! The six top vents alone would eat up a considerable amount space in the cargo area. But... that why she's called "the Ship of Riddles"!

My impression is that the Star Wars univers has slightly less crowded engine interiors though. I'd guess they were stretching what vintage parts they had.

This computer museum site should have a few bits and bobs that might fit the Star Wars vintage bill. It has everything from old bomber sights to first generation computer, with an emphasis on military hardware, the type that might end up in the surplus bin back in the 70s: http://www.glennsmuseum.com

All GREAT STUFF! I've been looking at those near exact style chassis. But I have to take weight into consideration. Those amps could become be a real problem!

I've always considered the YT-1300 more akin to a space tug boat... pushing cargo containers along. That would explain the lack of cargo space inside the ship and the oversized engines in back.

I know is slightly off kilter but have you thought about looking at pictures from the Ebon Hawk from the SW knights of the old Republic games you get to go into the holds and engine bay.
Also look at the Ghost from SW rebels again see stuff from inside I know they are generated images but are both SW and can see engine bays and other interiors from similar sized SW ships never know might provide some inspiration.

It's funny, Holy Wookiee, that you should mention it being a tug and then have a mention of Rebels in the post directly afterwards. Rebels recently re-canonized the YT-2400 (Dash Rendar's ship, the Outrider) blurry view in ANH notwithstanding. In the episode with a YT-2400, the ship is shown to transport cargo via large container modules attached to the ship's underside. You can see it in the regrettably blurry picture below.



Obviously the Falcon isn't a 2400, but considering that they were both CEC ships of similar designs and intended purposes, perhaps you're onto something thinking that the cargo is placed on the outside of the ship.

Hi Gang, Time for a mid-weekend update! I'm having some MAJOR issues with the forum posting the images in the usually way so bare with me

Sanded, primed and painted this console greeblie

I found these long forgotten canopy beam greeblies

Another round of sanding and primer are required

Finally added paint to these guys!

I'm really happy with how this one turned out

I finished the shelf greeblies (minus rockers - still need to sand)

Adhered into place

Black centers added

As you all know I'm trying to figure out how to greeblie the overhead access panels - one of the boxes in place

Holes for LEDs pre-cut

From the back - I need to design something to help mount these in place

I took a few minutes to design this brace / bracket

More on this guy later

Now its going to get kinda random with the photos. I removed the box and laser cut 3 designs. I worked with each design using different greeblies, placement, etc Enjoy!

Again, I'm still figuring out/struggling with the basic setup and layout but I'm really stuck... Here are just some random images of the above mentioned designs as they progressed (totally out of order) - ENJOY!

This looks excellent! Personally I'm partial to design I and III. I feel the more organic shape for deign II is a tad more 90s than 50s-60s surplus material.

The little fastening bracket is a thing of beauty, almost too bad it won't be visible!

Not to derail Sofa's thread too much, but I always thought this was the most likely way the freighter was meant to move cargo. It explains the offset cockpit, the oversized engines, lack of interior cargo space, and the mandibles in the front.
