1:1 Millennium Falcon Cockpit Replica - Group Build

Are you implying that SofaKing's a hunk of junk? Nooooo! How many parsecs can he build a cockpit in?

:D Nooooo, more a sort of 'he's got it where it counts' type of thing, I think. I wonder if the road to Kessel is like a long salt flat, she will need speed testing at some point.

Hi Gang,

Thanks for all the kind words! All is well and I feel great! :)

Had a great weekend chatting with Dan and Jake (sound and lighting gurus) and we've been tossing ideas around for the sound and lighting aspect for the cockpit. Believe it or not... all the GREAT ideas led to the decision to completely rebuild the center console. We're going to focus all the efforts on this part since it's a stand alone element of the cockpit - wiring, speakers, control boards, switches, etc... Look at it as a stepping stone / practice swing. This isn't as bad as it seems. Why? The workspace we're looking at has:

CNC Machine
3D Printer
Laser Cutter
Electronics

etc etc etc...

So... If we're able to secure the workspace (95% there) all the panels for the center console will be CNC cut in a matter of hours - it's going to be AWESOME! This is also pushing me to redo the canopy. It just makes sense to do it right. Although it will seem like I'm taking several steps back. Having access to a CNC machine that can correctly cut all those curved cuts and weird angles... OH BABY! :D

Dan has already laser cut a practice button panel for the new console. This will sit just left of the new throttle housing (pics coming).

Much Much More News coming in the next few days! :)

Thanks again for your concern and kind words. Happy 2014 to all. Let's get 2014 moving!

When this is finished and if you put some wings, it will fly for sure. :) I looked again at the photos and videos. So AWESOME!! :thumbsup

How are you getting access to this shop? Is it a club of sorts in your city, or is someone opening their shop to you?

Well, good news all around and getting some pro-tools will help for sure. Eager for the next update:)

I don't get to the rpf as often as I'd like but this is the first build I go to. Just amazing and inspiring.

Hi C,

Thank you very much. That means a lot. We'll be getting pics up VERY soon. We're still working but it's more planning than anything else. I don't think taking of pics of guys sitting around a table eating pizza is very exciting.

The show is fantastic! I really wish I could be there.
Falcon is alive!!

Hey Y,

Thanks! It was amazing! Wish you were there too! :) Although it was a single day event, the "Wow" and "Holy Cow" factor were definately there. It's only going to get better!

Hey Yoda,

The workspace is next to The Mind Gear Labs here in Huntsville (rapid prototyping lab). They hosted the mini maker show that piggy backed with the Mythbuster Tour. We're hoping to secure the empty unfinished space next door to them.

Hey J,

OH YEAH! All I have to do now is input the shape to be cut into the CNC. No more guessing! This truly changes the entire game! I am thrilled!

The workspace sounds fantastic! Hope you are completely better pretty soon here: I am looking forwards to 2014!

Hi Gang,

Well... came home Tuesday to a frozen pipe that decided to burst in the home office. The ceiling collapsed on top of the pc, monitor, printers, etc... I'll be offline until I get everything taken care of... ugh... oh yeah... pics coming...

Not the best way to kick start 2014...

:( ... I guess they don't winterize pipes too well down in the south, since you normally don't get that kind of cold. ...huge bummer... Up here in the north, it was minus -25 with minus -40 wind chill, and the pipes did fine. Was a bit worried though...

Hey T,

What a hectic couple of days... There are 5 industrial fans inside the house plus a HUGE dehumidifier. I can barely think it's so loud. Sleeping has become a mere thing of the past. We rarely see 4 degrees here in AL. BUT... all the pipes are supposed to be under the foundation. It's a mystery how this pipe found its way into the attic let alone passed inspection - we're looking into that as well.

The plumber said it was the weld at the elbow that failed not the pipe. So it wouldn't have mattered if there was insulation - it was just a matter of time. The best part, the weld failed on the bottom and the water was gushing downward. UGH...

I'll post pics of the damage as soon I get my PC up and running...

I'm excited to see what happens with the new shop. Bay 94 perhaps? :)

Hey C,

Thats a GREAT idea! I'll mention that to the guys... Consider it done! :)

SofaKing,

Firstly, outstanding work. :)

Secondly, did you ever do any research on the cockpit guns that we briefly see in ANH right before the tractor beam sequence? It's always perplexed me as to why I can find NO reference material on it. Just curious if you've ever come across anything. :)

Thanks...and keep up the good work.

Robert

Hi Gang,

Well... Good news... My computer seems to work... This is what I cam home to Tuesday afternoon

This water pouring out of the ceiling

UGH...

Let's move on to better stuff...

Here are the buttons Dan laser printed. These are going to be placed on the instrument panel. I'm hoping we can replace ALL the colored beveled buttons on the back wall

Kinda hard to see - more images later
