To be precise, in my experience with the show, they offer fifty percent of the appraised value. So if the dude says it could get 10k at auction, the seller is offered 5k. I have never seen anyone offered a nickel for a 1000 dollar item.
Bottom line: these are the fundamentals of commerce. This is how the world works. I'm sort of shocked that you find this so offensive, seeing as how this show is a microcosm of the retail world we live and breath in.
Oh, and please locate the "off" button on your TV, as Brad suggested. It is a powerful tool in shielding you from the realities of how the world works
