Hi Gang,
I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and Happy Holiday's. In light of the merriment and festivities we lost someone very close to our hearts. No doubt it came as quite a surprise having lost Carrie Fisher. My thoughts and prayers go to her family and friends during this very difficult time. May she rest in peace and we thank her for all she gave. I can't help thinking of any words that are more fitting... "To me... She will always be royalty..."
May You Rest in Peace
Time for an update! This was one of those long weekend builds that resulted in 1 step forward... two steps back. UGH... But... Enough of that!
For those of you following Holy Wookie's MF Cockpit Bunk Bed, I've been cutting a few greeblies to help bring more smiles to his adventures!
A big box of awesome!
I added some primer...
During all this I jumped around and worked on various areas of the cockpit. I quickly realized that the two corridor walls were in fact STILL too thin so I had to add a little bit of beef to the outside edges. Enter "Face palm" here. So let's get to work!
First thing I did was remove part of the back panel to reduce some weight and then added the necessary width to each side - approx 1"
I cut approx 40 strips of MDF and adhered / stacked into place
Then added a 4th layer 1/8" MDF
Then added the final 1/8" skin layer that equaled the 1" addition needed
As you can see, I then had to design, laser cut and adhere a new cap piece to cover the 1" addition
Both sides covered... now for some light sanding and filling!
I laser cut a cap
What a difference in thickness!
Technically, the corridor walls and the cockpit entrance wall should marry up perfectly. Working with essentially 3 sets of 3D models and having to hand cut many of the original panels... nothing really fits together the way it should. ALL that will be resolved with Cockpit Ver 2!
Sanding Sanding Sanding
Sealing the MDF edges
Another cap adhered in place
More filler means more sanding... oh joy...
Side by Side
Filler Filler Filler
Primer!
I then laser cut this template and marked out the material to remove
We now have a big hole in the corridor panel
Found some old insulation laying around
HMMMM... Needs something more
Scott had some old wire looms and other MISC electronics laying around so I tossed them in there to see how it would look!
I'm going to add some pipes to be more screen accurate. What do you guys think?
Jumping around... I finally bolted these little metal greeblies to the foot well panel
Love it! This quickly turned into one of my favorite panels!
During all of this I also laser cut this hole template for the upper panel grab handles
Using the drill press, I drilled the holes then adhered the bolts in place
With the grab handles drying I then adhered the cover panel in place
Once the panel dried I dry fitted the new greeblies
Then added some weathering to the greeblies
After all the holes were drilled I sanded smooth and added another layer of paint
When the paint dried... Pin Stripes!
I adhered all the little details
One more dry fit
The laser cutter makes adhering the blue and white tiles easy!
I then added several coats of satin clear - this helps keep the pin stripes in place
I laser this new greeblie
Which will mount here
I then adhered the tiles in place
So close to the finish line! The white screen at the bottom had to be re cut to fit
Most everything mounted... I still have to finish the "cockpit laser gun"
New screen
Painted black
Then painted white and a nice snug fit between the pin stripes
And this is where we are...
Another long weekend coming up! Let's try to get some REAL forward progress done!
More to Follow and Stay Tuned! Time to leave 2016 where it belongs! Bring on 2017!
