Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Pre-release)

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

It might suck, but it could never flop. I'll go so far as to say, even if VII and VIII suck, there will still be a IX, and it wont flop either. Star Wars is so huge, not even Jar Jar could bring it down. I'm not saying never, I'm just saying the brand is so strong, I can endure a lot of suckage.

I don't think VII will suck though, I think it will be awesome.

Lucas was like an old NFL coach. He was awesome and won the SuperBowl back in his prime, but now the game has changed and left him behind. He had to retire and move on. He has passed the mantle on to someone else. Hopefully they can go out there and bring home the title.

I want Star Wars to return to its former dominance. I remember a time when the debate over BEST MOVE EVER started with automatically admitting that the Star Wars Trilogy was considered one movie and was automatically #1, and the real debate was about the best movie other than Star Wars!

Jar Jar may not be able to bring it down, but he sure gave it his best shot!

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Agreed. Like the Polar Express creepiness. Google "30 Rock Uncanny Valley" and it will explain it all, within the episode's context of a pornographic video game creation.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Those older characters have to die sometime for the new generation to take over.
Obviously they have to die sometime, but the new generation can take over before that time. All it takes is for the older characters to step back and say, "I'm done, now it's up to you. I'll be sitting over here in front of my holopad and watching my stories if you need me." Or something to that effect.

Yeah, the younger Bridges only worked because he was a character who was only a program. That's the only reason that it worked at all. The not-quite-real look was excused by his being a program. As a character in "the real world", he would not have worked.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

We got EP. I and still got II and III.
The Phantom Menace may not have been well-received by some fans but, strictly counting box office receipts, it's the second-highest grossing movie in the Star Wars franchise to date (adjusting for inflation). Granted, much of that was likely due to the "A new Star Wars movie!" factor, but the studios don't care why people paid to see it as long as they got the money. Besides, at that point Lucas and the studio pretty much had to make Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, regardless of how well or poorly they performed at the box office, just to complete the story.

That would have worked if every character in the "in-computer" world looked like that, but with Bridges' character being the only one the visual difference was far too obvious.

Another shot of Hill looking Obi-wanish. Of course, he's older now.

George: "Don't look into the camera, do not look into the camera....." :lol

No, they really didn't; it stood out like a computer generated sore thumb.

INDEED.

But he did show up in the real world, in the flashback.

Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins begs to differ. ;)

He was reasonably well hidden through camera positioning for the flashback, but otherwise, I tend to agree that the audience only sort of excused it as "Well, he's a program, so...I guess it's ok." But even that is an after-the-fact explanation for what's basically just ineffective technology. It'd be like saying "Well, that's because the program version of him AND the real version are in the same world. When you're just a program, and there's no real world aspect to you in the system, you look normal." None of which is explained in the film, of course.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

George had a great idea, and then got to involved with controlling it with the prequels. I believe with new writers these should be very good. Set disappointment clock now.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

It does seem odd to me this relief that Abrams is at the helm, this faith that SW can come from 'someone else's hands'. Lucas became incapable of doing SW, yes, but it doesn't follow that joy will obtain merely from taking it out of Lucas' hands and giving it to someone else, no matter how much that someone else may love the OT. As far as I'm concerned, Lucas is the sole fountainhead of SW. That fountainhead dried up a long time ago, and nothing can be done to make the waters flow again. Just as you're never going to get another Beatles album, you're not going to get another Star Wars movie. What you'll get is just some entirely other thing with the SW label bolted onto it.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

You have a point, but either way I really think we have a lot less to worry about now than we did starting nearly a decade and a half ago.

Very true.

Honestly, I don't think the chances are very good of EP VII being a box office flop. Obviously far too soon to say anything about the film itself, but the Star Wars franchise carries enough weight to sell the the film. I mean heck, KOTCS got $786mil at the box office. And it sure as heck wasn't because the movie was great (I mean, I actually like KOTCS, but it's easily the worst/least good of the Indy films)

You're very right. Considering we have a thread here consisting of 151 pages and over 3,700 replies on something that so far is little more than cinematic vaporware, I'd say at least the opening weekend will be stellar. ;)

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Here is my hypothesis:

Star Wars + Disney + JJ + characters from the original = highest grossing Star Wars film ever

I don't know what the trailers will look like, or who else they will cast, but if they play their cards right, I think they could see Avatar money at the box office.

This all depends on if the executives are content riding on the Star Wars name, or they want to swing for the fences. I think Star Wars means enough to JJ that he will want to produce something of quality, with great writing and a great cast.

I'm excited about Star Wars again. It's a great time. Can't wait to line up.

I think we need Fanboys 2.

Agreed. You internet hero naysayers are going to eat it, this film will be great. Will it be STAR WARS? Depends on you, but it will be a great ride, and I am no JJ fanboy.
