Star Trek Beyond

You forgot about the Klingons that look nothing like Klingons.
Yeah, because Klingons have always looked the same since TOS:

ugh. my father wants to see this thing. i don't think i can take another round of lens flare and fast flashy camera moves.

There wasn't that much lens flare really. The camerawork in it was actually rather solid. Sure, a couple of the actions scenes were a little too much but it was nowhere near the last Matt Damon Borne movie or the Bayformers.

since you'veseen it, how would you rate it?

Say, is it closer to Star Trek 4 in greatness
Or Closer to STar Trek 1? some interesting things, but over all not so great?

I rather enjoyed it.

And before everyone assumes that i'm a Nutrek lover and that i don't know anything about Star Trek, I grew up with TOS, and have seen ALL of Trek.

But then I'm not one of those who constantly beats the drum of "It's not what Trek is about..."

It's what Trek is about now... and that's all there is to it. People can whine and complain all they want... but this is the Trek that we have. No, it may not be what you wanted... but I'll tell you what, I enjoyed this a helluva lot more than Insurrection or Nemesis.

A link to my relatively spoiler free comments in the post-release thread! : )

It may be the Trek that we have, but fans have been able to change things before. The question is whether JJ's Trek moves enough merchandise and licensing for them to keep this action-heavy path. Old Trek is still doing selling lots of stuff it seems- I wouldn't be surprised if the bulk of Trek merchandise is still TOS and TNG.

Hopefully at least the new TV show will be a little more restrained. Nemesis was in many ways a prelude to the shape of things to come, having an action director helm it and Picard playing rally car driver. I still don't get the hate Insurrection gets though.

I like insurrection.

aliens where creepy, but original...

it was a MUCH slower, character driven piece....which was needed after first contact. and gave picard a great love interest...

It may be the Trek we have but that doesn't mean we have to see it. I'm not so desperate for new Star Trek that I will lower my standards simply because that's all there is. If the only ice cream being made was poop flavored I wouldn't be standing in line for that either.

that's fine... you're only limiting yourself. And I guess if you're OK with that, then I am as well. :thumbsup

It's not as if I'm the type to accept any entry into any franchise with open arms. I saw Blade Trinity. I hated it... but I still SAW it first, before I judged it.

That's all i'm saying.

I'm all for being open minded. I've seen the last two JJ-Trek movies. I enjoyed the first one for what it was. I hated the second one for feeling the need to talk down to the audience and for the slap-dash execution of Khan's character. I have no intention of paying money to see Beyond in the theater.

If people have disliked the first two, or been ambivalent about them, when does it stop being open minded and become an act of self-flagellation in your mind to continue giving a franchise chances?

For me it's an act of self flagulation.

I hated both of the Abrams treks. I hate what Abrams did with star wars.

And I went last night to see the new trek. Why?

For one, I've been watching TOS on netflix recently. And the other is that I really like what Justin Lin did for fast and the furious. As absurd as his action sequences were, the films aren't nearly as flimsy as Abrams stuff. Plus, he's better at character relationships.

And in all honesty, I was right. The characters were much better and the plot was much better. There was a better sense of ensemble and we finally felt like we were exploring some space.

Mind you, the studio still got control of it in the final act and it became disaster porn ( once again)

I guess when people who's opinion you respect tell you to give it a try, but you refuse to accept the possibility.

As you've said yourself, you enjoyed the first one, disliked the second. So you're at even odds, now. It's not as if you've given it seven chances and it's blown six of them.

And if you like this one, then you have two to the plus, one to the negative. If not, then two negs to one plus and you actually have some stats to talk about.

Yeah, I am going to see it Monday and without exception all my Trek friends, especially the one's from the Treks in Sci-Fi podcast FB group, really enjoyed it and they are some of the people who are huge fans, willing to be critical, and are somewhat split on the new universe. Same with some folks here.

I plan on waiting until it's on Netflix. There are far too many movies coming out that I'm actually excited about the prospect of seeing in the theaters to spend the money going out for Beyond, unfortunately.

With that said, I stand by my concerns over the movie's storytelling and the over-reliance on disaster porn.

Not limiting myself at all. There's nothing to see in Nu-Trek that I cant see in any of the other numerous action/adventure/fantasy/sci-fi franchises that dominate the summer box office. I never watched the various series or went to see a Star Trek movie for the action or the humor or seeing pretty young people bitch at each other, there are too many movies and shows that follow that formula already and there was no need beyond greed to convert Trek into yet another shallow bit of nonsense. I supported the first two movies, and yes they had their moments of fun, but there is no depth and nothing to really latch onto.

shhh.. you're not allowed to critique things. people will feel the need to tell how sorry they feel for you for not giving it a chance. ;o).

First it's 'You can't judge it until you see the trailer'

Then it progresses to 'you can't judge it until you've seen the movie'

maybe the next one it graduates to is 'you know, crappy films have done well at the box office. doesn't mean this one isn't good!'

although, that last one might not work in this case since it's already earned 60 million ;o).
We detractors of movies don't mind if you like it, so long as you don't mind our ability to pre judge and hate something :).

Love original trek, not fussed with this trek. Dont like Pine as Kirk. I'll see it. But not till its on tv. Not spending anything to see it. Not pre judging its quality as a movie I just have no desire to see it. It all just seems a bit lack lustre. Throwing in ideas rather than having a good cohesive story. And as for destroying the ship again (not a spoiler, its in every trailer) I know the timeline has changed but the original Enterprise was some 20 years old before she went down. Not 5!
