JABBA'S SAIL BARGE 1/6 SCALE

Actually, the diorama for this model is based on this image; View attachment 1466250
so not sure how many figures will be aboard

it's just shy of 5 metres long

It's the next build after this one

Ok so a bit more progress on the barge...started detailing the hull with the doors and windows;

It never occurred to me before but there is no obvious way for Jabba to get in or out of this ship?
Through the cargo hold?

Just found this! This build is absolute madness in the best possible way, truly truly epic, cannot wait to see the final product.

Are those window hatches made out of wood?
Yes, they're laser cut from plywood

Ok, so I've finished detailing the hull;

Next to do is fitting the rudders and tackling the sail stringers

I have to make a confession: I'm always eager to see your next update:cool::cool: because, to tell you the truth mate, I don't need drugs...I just need your update; that's my high(y)(y):notworthy::notworthy::notworthy::notworthy:

Cheers guys...glad I'm helping to keep u on the straight and narrow Joberg

So, I am experimenting with paint finishes for the hull and deck
The hull is gonna be like an aged/rusted bronze effect...I've loaded polyester resin with cold casting bronze powder and painted it on. Then poured ammonia into sawdust to create the fumes that will hopefully tarnish and darken the surface which I will buff back with wire wool

With the deck I want to achieve a distressed black metal effect. So I added Iron Oxide powder to black acrylic paint and applied it to the deck. Then spritzed it with lemon juice as a catalyst to bring out the reactive element in the paint

I'll post some pics in a coupla days when it's had time to react
Also fitted the rudders

And got my head around the sail stringers. I started by steaming Elm battens but they really weren't gonna be strong enough, so I switched to laminating with ply and epoxy

Yep, another of my fix mate:p(y)(y):notworthy::notworthy: Love the way you're approaching that paint job to imitate various metals. Interested to see the reaction of the lemon on the paint!

Geek1138,
Interesting use of wood shavings & saw dust.

I am sure you will, but when using a large container of NH3, make sure the opening is above your nose. As a student chemistry lab assistant years ago, I opened a large container on the floor to fill the small eye dropper bottles for the next class. This large glass container was half full and apparently in the sun coming from a window. I woke up on the floor.

Quick update; Iron oxide with lemon juice worked pretty well. I ended up just loading black acrylic paint with the powder and spritzing that when it dried;

I will buff this back a bit but it will act as a base coat for the final deck
The Ammonia blackened the Bronze powder so I'm going at it with wire wool to expose the metal;

I might be able to save a step- I found this today:

This stuff is HEAVY. like double the weight of a normal quart. I presume it is loaded with iron powder…

I didn’t grab it, but may in the future for, say a base coat on a printed firearm?
