Re: Fellowship Gimli - The Lord of the Rings

This is so awesome... I just... wow.

great job! cant wait to see how it comes out :)

im really curious to know how you did this. it looks fantastic in the end result!

Thanks! I actually cut it out in foam first and then I made the mold from that.

belligerent: I ended up answering my own question about the foam, with the help of a friend. Used my orbital hand sander with a high grit sheet of sand paper. Took it down considerably. You just have to work at it, but you can remove it completely!

Re: Fellowship Gimli - The Lord of the Rings

This is looking awesome!

You can actually speed up removing the pattern by using a lower grit sandpaper, but be careful because it chews through quickly. It'll leave the surface fuzzy, but a few passes from a heat gun will fix that problem. Then hit it with a high grit and voila!

That's what I've been doing anyway. I've only made the mistake of not sanding down far enough one time, but never again! (I hope :cry)

Thanks Nox!

Wood bevelved and varnished…blades applied and ready for the first coat of resin. I’ll be adding the Dwarvish details once it’s cured.

Then the leather bits around the bottom of the handle.

Re: Fellowship Gimli - The Lord of the Rings

awesome update! its coming together quite fast considering the amount of detail and tedious tasks! im impressed!

Re: Fellowship Gimli - The Lord of the Rings

Loved the helmet, but loved the axe even more. I'm all for wooden props, but sometimes foam weapons look just perfect (like yours)

Re: Fellowship Gimli - The Lord of the Rings

Wow. I like where you are going with this. I'm just not that talented! Good job, keep it going.

Re: Fellowship Gimli - The Lord of the Rings

Thanks everyone! Nothing big to report on yet...just still assembling the weaving for the tunic, planning out the fat suit rigging and about to start ventilating the beard.

I did make the belt buckle though! It's EVA and resin.

A few friends and I are about to do a head casting day, as we all pitched in for a big box of alginate. I have to get started on my Gimli brow and nose sculpt soon!

Re: Fellowship Gimli - The Lord of the Rings

Got my face cast done for my prosthetics, this weekend! We got together with local friends and did 4 face casts in one day! First time doing this...was definitely a learning experience!

Excuse the flick off...my friends were trying to make me laugh under there...-_-. It's the only pic that was taken after the plaster bandages were put on.

All 4 casts done and awaiting plaster:

I'd definitely like to redo mine as, like I said, this was a first time for all of us working with alginate. I'd like a full head cast soon!

Re: Fellowship Gimli - The Lord of the Rings

You always have such cool builds, and this one is no exception. I love the way it's turning out!

Re: Fellowship Gimli - The Lord of the Rings

Thanks guys!

I got the mustache pretty much ventilated and the beard prepped, but decided I wanted to get the prosthetics started to have them flushed out and get any problems taken care of super early.

Me being silly with my mustache and clay tools:

Re: Fellowship Gimli - The Lord of the Rings

Always nice to see Tolkien's dwarves and kudos for making your own chain mail. I'd go crazy in the process.
Khazad ai menu !

Re: Fellowship Gimli - The Lord of the Rings

Looks awesome so far. How fine a lace are you using for your mustache/beard? I've seen laces for ventilating available several places but the really fine stuff seems to be pricey (of course...). I have to do some ventilated facial hair pieces for something and am wondering how noticeable it is if one uses coarser lace...

I'm using flesh colored tulle that I've starched with a homemade starching recipe: Homemade Liquid Starch Recipe | Woman Portal - Hairstyles , short haircuts , long hairstyles, Weight Loss tips

It makes it thicker and harder to rip, but still fine enough to seamlessly blend into your skin. I'm using a small ventilating latch hook.

The nose is about complete and ready for molding. I might refine some of the skin textures and cut out a little bit more on the fleshing edges. But since I'm aiming to start with a gelatine appliance, my seams should blend out fairly well with witch hazel.
